Activity

The Empathy Exchange Activity

Overview

In this activity, students are paired to share personal stories focused on moments of empathy. The goal is for students to practice active listening and reflect on the feelings expressed during their partner's narration. This exercise is designed to support social-emotional learning and build stronger community bonds among peers.

Activity Instructions

1. Pairing Up

  • Organize students into pairs ensuring everyone gets a partner.

  • Explain that this is a safe space to share personal experiences and that respectful listening is key.

2. Storytelling

  • Each student will take turns sharing a personal story that highlights a moment when they felt deeply understood or when they recognized empathy in others.

  • Use the prompts provided on the Slide Deck: The Empathy Exchange Slides such as "When did you feel truly listened to?" and "How did that experience impact you?" as guides.
  • While one partner shares, the other practices active listening by focusing on the story and taking notes if necessary.

3. Reflection & Discussion

  • After both partners have shared their stories, ask each pair to discuss the following questions:

    • How did sharing your story make you feel?
    • What did you learn about your partner's feelings and experiences?
    • How do you think empathy can strengthen our classroom community?
  • Each pair should then compile their insights and prepare to share one key takeaway with the class.

4. Whole-Class Discussion

  • Bring the class together and invite several pairs to share their key reflections.

  • Guide the discussion further with questions such as "What patterns did you notice in the stories shared today?" and "How can we apply these learnings to support one another in our school community?"

Follow-Up Points

  • Review the importance of maintaining a respectful and open-minded atmosphere during shared personal experiences.

  • Encourage students to continue practicing active listening in everyday interactions.

  • Remind students of the key role empathy plays in building a supportive classroom environment.
