Counselor Check-In Dialogue

Counselor: "Hello [Student Name], welcome back! I’m glad we have a few minutes to talk about how your Emotion Map went this week."

Counselor: "Let’s open up your Personal Emotion Tracker. First, can you share one emotion you felt most often this week?"

Potential follow-up prompts:

  • "Can you tell me more about what was happening when you felt this emotion?"
  • "On a scale of 1–10, how strong was it? Why did you give it that number?"

Counselor: "Next, what triggers did you notice that led to that emotion?"

Potential follow-up prompts:

  • "Was the trigger a person, a place, or something else?"
  • "Did any unexpected situations come up? Tell me about them."

Counselor: "Now let’s talk about your coping strategies. Which strategy did you use that felt the most effective?"

Potential follow-up prompts:

  • "What exactly did you do?"
  • "Why do you think it helped?"

Counselor: "Were there any strategies you tried that didn’t work as well?"

Potential follow-up prompts:

  • "What made them less helpful?"
  • "How did you feel afterward?"

Counselor: "Based on everything you’ve noticed, what new strategy or adjustment would you like to try next week?"

Potential follow-up prompts:

  • "How will you remember to use it?"
  • "What might get in the way? How can you handle that?"

Counselor: "Before we finish, is there anything else you’d like to discuss about tracking your emotions?"

Counselor: "That’s great. For next week, let’s focus on trying your new strategy and noting how it goes. We’ll check in again after you fill out another week on your tracker. Thanks for sharing, [Student Name]!"
