The Counselor is Your Friend

Introduce the school counselor

This lesson will introduce young students to their school counselor through fun and engaging activities. Students will understand the importance of sharing their feelings and seeking help when needed. The lesson fosters an understanding of the counselor's role and encourages students to communicate openly.

Step 1

Introduction

3 mins

  • Welcome the students and introduce the topic of the day: 'The Counselor is Your Friend'.
  • Briefly explain what a counselor does in kid-friendly language.
  • Tell the students that they will get to know the school counselor today through a fun story/role-play.

Step 2

Story/Role-Play Activity

7 mins

  • Choose a storybook about a school counselor or use a role-play script where a character meets and talks to the school counselor.
  • If using a role-play, assign roles to students or perform it yourself if more appropriate.
  • During the story/role-play, pause to ask questions and ensure the children are engaged and understanding.

Discussion

5 mins

  • Engage students with guided discussion questions about the role of the counselor and when they might want to see the counselor.
  • Use prompts from the 'Discussion Questions' attachment to help facilitate the conversation.

Step 4

Feelings Worksheet

4 mins

  • Distribute the 'Feelings Worksheet' and explain how to complete it.
  • Encourage students to express how they might feel in different situations and when they might seek the help of the counselor.
  • Collect the worksheets and thank the students for their participation.

  • Recap the main points of the lesson.
  • Remind the students that the school counselor is their friend and is there to help them.
  • Encourage them to reach out whenever they need someone to talk to.
