Ten-Frame Treasure Hunt

Adding in a ten-frame

In this engaging lesson, students will participate in a treasure hunt to find ten-frame cards hidden around the classroom. They will then use these cards to solve addition problems using their ten-frames. This activity promotes both math skills and teamwork, making learning fun and interactive.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

Briefly explain what a ten-frame is and how it is used for addition.
Show an example of a ten-frame and demonstrate an addition problem using it.
Explain the rules and objectives for the treasure hunt activity.

Step 2

Treasure Hunt Activity

15 minutes

Hand out worksheets and pencils.
Explain that ten-frame cards are hidden around the classroom and students need to find them.
Once they find a card, they should pair up with another student.
In pairs, they will use their worksheets to record the numbers on their ten-frames and solve the addition problem.
Encourage students to find as many cards as they can within the time limit.

Step 3

Discussion and Review

5 minutes

Gather students back to the circle.
Ask students to share their findings and addition problems with the class.
Discuss any challenges they faced and how they solved them.
Praise students for their teamwork and effort.

Step 4

Closure

5 minutes

Hand out small prizes or stickers for completing the treasure hunt.
Recap the key points of the lesson.
Answer any final questions from students.
Encourage students to practice using ten-frames at home.
