Slide Deck
Solar System Technology
Exploring the planets and the technologies that help us understand space.
Welcome the class and introduce the lesson. Explain that today we’ll explore the solar system and the technologies that make discoveries possible. Share the learning goals.
Our Solar System at a Glance
• Mercury
• Venus
• Earth
• Mars
• Jupiter
• Saturn
• Uranus
• Neptune
Provide a brief overview of all eight planets in order from the Sun. Emphasize size and order for context.
Terrestrial Planets
Rocky worlds close to the Sun:
• Mercury: cratered, extreme temperatures
• Venus: thick clouds, volcanic features
• Earth: liquid water, life
• Mars: red soil, ice at poles
Describe characteristics of the rocky, inner planets. Invite students to share what they notice about each world.
Gas Giants
Huge planets with thick atmospheres:
• Jupiter: largest planet, Great Red Spot storm
• Saturn: prominent ring system
Discuss the gas giants. Highlight distinctive features like storms and rings.
Ice Giants & Smaller Worlds
• Uranus: tipped on its side, faint rings
• Neptune: powerful winds, Great Dark Spot
• Dwarf Planets & Asteroids: Pluto, Ceres, asteroid belt objects
Cover the ice giants and smaller bodies beyond the main planets.
Key Space Technologies
Instruments that make exploration possible:
• Telescopes (ground-based & space-based)
• Satellites & robotic probes
• Planetary rovers & landers
• Space telescopes (e.g., Hubble)
Transition into the tools we use to study these worlds. Ask students if they’ve seen any of these in action.
Iconic Space Missions
• Voyager 1 & 2: first interstellar probes
• Curiosity Rover: drilling on Mars
• New Horizons: Pluto flyby
• Hubble Space Telescope: deep-space imaging
Showcase famous missions. Ask: “Which of these missions do you find most exciting?”
Summary & Discussion
How have these technologies expanded our view of the solar system?
Which planet or mission interests you most, and why?
Wrap up key takeaways and prompt discussion. Encourage students to think about future technologies.
Reading
Spacecraft Technology Video
Watch this engaging 2-minute video from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on how spacecraft explore our solar system:
Watch “How Spacecraft Work” Video
Video Highlights
• Satellites orbit Earth and collect data
• Robotic probes travel to distant planets
• Planetary rovers land and explore surfaces
After Watching
- Name two types of spacecraft you saw in the video.
- What is one function of a robotic probe?
- Why are rovers important for studying planets?
Activity
Interactive Planetarium Exploration
In this activity, students work in pairs to explore the solar system using the online planetarium tool.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Open the Interactive Planetarium Application on your device.
- In the planet menu, select one planet to explore.
- Rotate and zoom the view to observe surface features, rings, and atmospheric patterns.
- Click the orbit-path icon to see the planet’s distance from the Sun and length of its year.
- Locate and count any moons or rings around the planet.
Record Your Findings:
- Planet Name: ___________
- Size (relative to Earth): ___________
- Distance from the Sun: ___________
- Number of Moons/Rings: ___________
- Notable Surface or Atmospheric Features: ___________
Guiding Questions:
- What distinguishing features did you notice?
- How do the planet’s orbit and tilt affect its seasons?
- Which past or current missions have visited this planet?
