Task Titans!

Conquering Our To-Dos, Big and Small!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting idea of becoming a 'Task Titan.' Ask them what they think a 'task' is and what it means to 'conquer' something.

What's a 'Task Titan'?

It's someone who tackles their work with a plan, even when it's tough!

Explain that a 'Task Titan' isn't just someone who finishes easy work, but someone who bravely faces ALL their work, even the tricky or less fun parts. Give a simple example like cleaning their room or eating vegetables.

Why Do Tasks Matter?

Tasks help us learn, grow, and feel super proud of ourselves!
They help our classroom run smoothly!

Lead a brief discussion. Ask students: 'Why is it important to do all our tasks, even if we don't always want to?' Guide them to think about learning new things, helping the class, and feeling proud.

Our Secret Weapon: Task Power-Ups!

What helps you get started or keep going, even when a task is tricky or not your favorite?

Introduce the concept of 'Task Power-Ups.' These are strategies that help us get through tasks. Explain that everyone has different 'power-ups.'

Brainstorming Power-Ups!

Let's share our ideas!
What are some things that help you focus and finish?

Brainstorm with students. Write their ideas on the board. Examples: taking a deep breath, breaking the task into smaller parts, listening to music (if allowed), thinking about the reward afterward (e.g., playtime).

A Quick Start: The 'First Five' Power-Up!

Sometimes the hardest part is just starting.
Try working for just 5 minutes! You might find it's easier than you thought.

Explain the 'First Five' strategy. Emphasize that just starting for a short time can make a big difference. 'Even if it's not your favorite, try just five minutes!'

Your Choices, Your Power!

You get to choose!

  • What order will you do your tasks?
  • Where will you work?
  • What tools will you use?

Introduce the idea of choices within tasks. 'You might not choose if you do the task, but you can choose how you do it!' Give examples: choosing what order to do problems, where to sit, what pencil to use.

The Reward: That 'I Did It!' Feeling!

Finishing a task, big or small, feels amazing!
It means you're ready for the next adventure (or a fun break!).

Explain that finishing a task, especially a tough one, gives you a great feeling. Connect this to the idea of earning rewards or moving on to preferred activities. Facilitate the “My Task Power-Up” Activity Sheet.

You Are A Task Titan!

Remember your Power-Ups!
Every task you complete makes you stronger and smarter.

Conclude by reiterating that everyone can be a Task Titan by using strategies and making choices. Encourage them to use their Power-Up sheets.

Script

Teacher Script: Task Titans!

Introduction & Hook (Slide 1: Task Titans!)

"Good morning, second-grade superstars! Look at our first slide today: Task Titans! Isn't that an exciting name? What do you think a 'Task Titan' might be? Turn and talk to a partner for 30 seconds, then we'll share."

(Allow students to discuss. Call on a few students to share.)

"That's right! A Task Titan is someone who is ready to tackle their tasks, even when they seem big or tricky. Today, we're going to learn how all of us can become Task Titans!"

What's a 'Task Titan'? (Slide 2: What's a 'Task Titan'?)

"As our slide says, a Task Titan is someone who takes on their work with a plan, even when it’s tough. Think about a superhero. Do they only fight easy villains? No! They face all challenges! Being a Task Titan means you’re ready to face all your school tasks, big or small, fun or… not-so-fun!"

Why Do Tasks Matter? (Slide 3: Why Do Tasks Matter?)

"Why do you think it's important to do all our tasks in school? What happens when we finish our work? What do we learn?"

(Allow a few students to share. Guide them to ideas like learning new things, feeling proud, helping the classroom run smoothly, and being ready for fun activities.)

"Exactly! When we complete our tasks, we learn new things, we get smarter, and we feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment. It also helps our classroom run smoothly because we're all doing our part!"

Our Secret Weapon: Task Power-Ups! (Slide 4: Our Secret Weapon: Task Power-Ups!)

"Sometimes, starting or finishing a task, especially one we don't prefer, can feel like a big mountain to climb. But guess what? We all have secret weapons! I call them Task Power-Ups!"

"A Task Power-Up is anything that helps you get started or keep going, even when a task is tricky or not your favorite. What do you think some of your own Task Power-Ups might be?"

Brainstorming Power-Ups! (Slide 5: Brainstorming Power-Ups!)

"Let's brainstorm together! What are some things that help you focus, get started, or finish your work? Share your ideas, and I'll write them on the board!"

(Write student ideas on the board. Prompt with examples if needed: 'Does taking a deep breath help?', 'What about thinking about what you get to do after your work is done?', 'Sometimes just sitting down and starting helps, doesn't it?')

"These are all fantastic ideas! We can use these Power-Ups whenever we feel stuck."

A Quick Start: The 'First Five' Power-Up! (Slide 6: A Quick Start: The 'First Five' Power-Up!)

"Here's one of my favorite Power-Ups: The 'First Five!' Sometimes the hardest part of a task is just starting. So, if you're looking at a task and thinking, 'Oh no, this is going to be hard' or 'I really don't want to do this,' I challenge you to try this:

  • Just start working for five minutes.
  • Set a timer, or I can tell you when five minutes are up.
  • Focus on just those five minutes, and don't worry about the rest of the task yet.

"You might be surprised! Often, after five minutes, you'll find it's not so bad, and you're already in the flow of working!"

Your Choices, Your Power! (Slide 7: Your Choices, Your Power!)

"Another great Power-Up is using your choices! We might not always get to choose if we do a task, but we often get to choose how we do it. Think about it:"

  • "What order will you do your tasks in? Maybe you want to do the tricky one first and get it over with, or save it for last after you've warmed up."
  • "Where will you work? At your desk? In a quiet corner?"
  • "What tools will you use? A special pencil? Different colored markers for different parts?"

"Making these small choices can give you a big feeling of control and make the task feel more like your task."

The Reward: That 'I Did It!' Feeling! (Slide 8: The Reward: That 'I Did It!' Feeling!)

"There's a special feeling we get when we finish something, isn't there? That 'I Did It!' Feeling! It's a mix of proud and relieved, and ready for whatever's next, maybe even a fun break or our favorite activity!"

"Now, let's put some of these ideas into practice! I have a special “My Task Power-Up” Activity Sheet for you. You'll think about a task that's sometimes tough for you and then list your own Power-Ups to help you conquer it!"

(Distribute the “My Task Power-Up” Activity Sheet. Give students 5-7 minutes to complete it. Circulate and assist as needed. Transition to the Cool Down when complete.)

You Are A Task Titan! (Slide 9: You Are A Task Titan!)

"Amazing work, future Task Titans! Remember, every time you use a Power-Up to complete a task, you're getting stronger and smarter. You can do it!"

"To wrap up our lesson, I have one last thing: a Cool Down: "I Conquered It!" Ticket. On this ticket, I want you to write or draw one thing you learned today about becoming a Task Titan, or one Power-Up you plan to use this week!"

(Distribute the Cool Down: "I Conquered It!" Ticket. Collect them as students finish.)

"Thank you, Task Titans! I know you'll use these strategies to conquer all your awesome tasks!"
