Slide Deck

Engaging Openers for Conversation

Effective conversation starters spark interest and pave the way for meaningful dialogue. In this slide, we'll explore examples and tips on how to initiate engaging conversations.

Introduce the concept of conversation openers. Explain that the goal of this slide is to showcase what an engaging conversation starter looks like and why it's important.

Examples of Engaging Openers

• 'Hi, how was your day?'
• 'What was the best part of your weekend?'
• 'I noticed you're reading [a specific book]. What do you like about it?'

These examples are designed to open up dialogue and invite further conversation.

Discuss multiple examples of openers. This is a great time to ask students for input on what makes these openers work or how to improve them.

Guiding Questions for Openers

• How can you make a conversation starter sound more inviting?
• What follow-up questions can deepen the discussion?
• How do you show genuine interest in the conversation?

Present a slide with guiding questions that teachers can use during role-play sessions to facilitate and monitor conversation flow.

Tips for Starting a Conversation

• Smile and maintain eye contact
• Listen actively and build on what the other person shares
• Practice makes perfect!

Conclude with tips and encourage students to use these strategies during the role-playing activity.

Conversation Starters Practice Activity

In this activity, students will work in small groups to practice initiating conversations using a variety of provided conversation starters. This activity is designed to help students build confidence and explore different strategies for starting engaging discussions.

Activity Structure

  1. Materials Needed:

  2. Instructions:

    • Step 1: Divide into small groups. Each group will receive a set of conversation starter prompts.
    • Step 2: Identify which conversation starter each group member feels most comfortable using and discuss why.
    • Step 3: Role play different conversation scenarios by having one student start a conversation using the selected prompt while the others respond.
    • Step 4: Rotate roles so that each student has the opportunity to both initiate and respond.
    • Step 5: After the role-play, each group should reflect on the experience discussing what worked well and what could be improved.
  3. Guiding Questions:

    • Which conversation starter felt the most natural to use? Why?
    • How did your conversation partner respond, and what follow-up questions emerged?
    • What could make your conversation starter even more engaging?
  4. Teacher's Role:

    • Circulate the room to monitor discussions and provide feedback.
    • Use guiding questions from the Engaging Openers (Slide Deck) to offer support when needed.
    • Encourage students to reflect on their comfort levels and share strategies for improvement during the group discussion.

Student Reflection:
Write down one way this practice helped you feel more confident in starting conversations and one question you still have about initiating discussions.
