Switch and Sketch

Foster cognitive flexibility

In this lesson, students will engage in a creative drawing activity called 'Switch and Sketch,' where they will draw based on prompts that change every few minutes. Drawing paper, Colored pencils, Markers, Timer, and Printable Prompt Cards

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Gather students in a circle and introduce the activity 'Switch and Sketch.'
  • Explain that they will be drawing based on different prompts that will change every few minutes.
  • Discuss the importance of being flexible and creative in their thinking.

Step 2

Drawing Session 1

10 mins

  • Distribute drawing paper and colored pencils/markers to each student.
  • Present the first prompt from the Printable Prompt Cards.
  • Set the timer for 5 minutes and allow students to draw based on the prompt.

Step 3

Switch and Sketch

20 mins

  • After the timer goes off, instruct students to switch their papers with a neighbor.
  • Present a new prompt and set the timer for another 5 minutes.
  • Repeat the process, allowing students to switch papers and draw based on new prompts for a total of 4 rounds.

Step 4

Reflection and Sharing

5 mins

  • Ask students to return to their original drawings.
  • Allow students to share their drawings and discuss how they adapted to each new prompt.
  • Encourage students to reflect on how it felt to change their thinking and adapt creatively.

Step 5

Closure

5 mins

  • Summarize the activity and highlight the importance of cognitive flexibility.
  • Encourage students to think about how they can apply these skills in other areas of their lives.
