Lesson Plan
Surfing the Waves of Change
Students will identify one upcoming change in their lives and outline two growth opportunities that could emerge from it, using a reframing strategy introduced in class.
Change is a constant, especially during high school. This lesson equips students with a 'growth mindset' tool to transform perceived challenges into exciting opportunities, fostering resilience and a positive outlook.
Audience
9th Grade
Time
45 minutes
Approach
Through discussion and an interactive activity, students will reframe personal changes into growth opportunities.
Prep
Teacher Preparation
15 minutes
- Review the Wave to Opportunity Slides and internalize the Reframe Patter Script to ensure a smooth flow.
- Prepare any necessary display equipment for the slide deck.
- Make sure students have paper and pens/pencils for the Opportunity Telescope Activity Guide.
Step 1
Warm-Up: Weather Report Check-In
4 min
- Distribute the Weather Report Check-In Warm-Up or display the prompt.
- Instruct students to choose a weather icon (e.g., sun, clouds, storm) that represents how they feel about change today.
- Ask students to show their chosen icon via a quick hand signal or by holding up the corresponding card if provided.
Step 2
Vocabulary Spotlight
6 min
- Present the vocabulary terms: uncertainty, resilience, reframe, opportunity using the Wave to Opportunity Slides.
- Briefly define each term and ask students for examples or synonyms to check understanding.
- Emphasize how these words connect to experiencing and responding to change.
Step 3
Guided Discussion
12 min
- Facilitate a discussion using prompts from the Reframe Patter Script and Wave to Opportunity Slides:
- "Why does change often feel uncomfortable or scary?"
- "Can you think of a time when a change, even if difficult, ultimately helped you?"
- "What kinds of stories do we tell ourselves about change? Are they always true?"
- "How can shifting our mindset change our experience of something?"
- Encourage active listening and respectful sharing among students.
Step 4
Interactive Activity: Opportunity Telescope
18 min
- Introduce the Opportunity Telescope Activity Guide and explain that students will be visualizing an upcoming change.
- Lead students through a guided visualization as outlined in the script, prompting them to identify an upcoming change and 'zoom in' on potential growth opportunities.
- Instruct students to privately jot down at least two growth opportunities that could emerge from their identified change.
Step 5
Closing Thought: Pocket Pep Talk
5 min
- Share the closing thought: 'The same waves that knock us off balance can lift us higher if we learn to ride them.'
- Distribute the Pocket Pep Talk Cool-Down and ask students to write a short, encouraging message to themselves about embracing change.
- Briefly reiterate the main idea: change brings opportunity, and our mindset helps us find it.

Warm-Up: Weather Report Check-In (4 minutes)
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! To start our class today, we're going to do a quick 'Weather Report Check-In.' I want you to think about the idea of 'change.' It could be a small change, a big change, something coming up, or something that's happened recently.
Now, show me with a quick hand signal how you feel about change today:
- Sun (☀️): You feel excited or positive about change.
- Clouds (☁️): You feel a bit unsure or neutral.
- Storm (⛈️): You feel worried or uncomfortable about change.
Take a moment to reflect and then show me your signal. No need to explain, just a quick visual. Interesting to see where we all are today!"
Vocabulary Spotlight (6 minutes)
"Great job with the check-in! Today, we're going to talk about navigating change, and to do that, we need a few key terms in our toolkit. Take a look at these words on the slides Wave to Opportunity Slides as I introduce them.
First up, Uncertainty. (Click to next slide)
Uncertainty is that feeling when things are unknown or unpredictable. It’s like standing at a fork in the road and not knowing which path to take. Can anyone give me an example of something that feels uncertain?
Next, Resilience. (Click to next slide)
Resilience is the ability to bounce back quickly from difficulties. Think of it like a spring—it gets pushed down, but it always springs back up. It's toughness, like a superhero's ability to recover. When have you seen someone show great resilience?
Then we have Reframe. (Click to next slide)
To reframe means to change the way something is expressed or understood. It's about looking at something from a different angle, giving it a new 'frame.' If you're looking at a painting, you might reframe it to make it look different. How might we reframe a difficult situation?
And finally, Opportunity. (Click to next slide)
An opportunity is a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. It’s a chance for something good to happen. Often, opportunities can be hidden within changes. What's an example of an opportunity you've had recently?"
Guided Discussion (12 minutes)
"Now that we have some common language, let's dive deeper into our experiences with change. I want this to be an open and respectful discussion, so please listen to one another.
(Refer to Wave to Opportunity Slides for prompts)
-
My first question for you all is: Why does change often feel uncomfortable or scary? What are some of the immediate feelings that come up when you know something big is about to change?
-
That's a great point. Now, let's flip it a bit: Can you think of a time when a change, even if difficult or scary at first, ultimately helped you? Maybe it led to a new skill, a new friend, or a new perspective.
-
Building on that, what kinds of stories do we tend to tell ourselves about change? Do we always focus on the potential negatives, or do we sometimes look for the positives? Are these stories always true?
-
Based on what we just discussed about 'reframe' and the stories we tell, how can shifting our mindset—how we think about a change—actually change our experience of that something? What's the power of perspective?
Interactive Activity: Opportunity Telescope Introduction (2 minutes of 18 min total)
"Fantastic discussion, everyone. You’ve really grasped the idea that our perspective on change can make all the difference. Now, we're going to put that into practice with an activity I call the Opportunity Telescope Activity Guide. Imagine you have a special telescope that lets you look into the future of a change and spot all the amazing possibilities. I'll guide you through it."
Closing Thought (5 minutes)
"Before we wrap up, I want to leave you with a thought. It’s a bit like a wisdom nugget for navigating life’s changes: (Refer to Wave to Opportunity Slides for quote) "The same waves that knock us off balance can lift us higher if we learn to ride them." Think about that. The very things that seem to challenge us can also be the things that propel us forward.
Now, for our cool-down, you're going to create a quick Pocket Pep Talk Cool-Down for yourselves. I'll give you more instructions for that in a moment. But remember, your mindset is your surfboard in the ocean of change. Choose to ride the waves."
Activity
Opportunity Telescope Activity Guide
Objective: To help students visualize an upcoming change and reframe it to identify potential growth opportunities.
Time: 18 minutes
Instructions for Students:
-
Find Your Focus: Get comfortable in your seat. Close your eyes if you feel comfortable, or just soften your gaze. Take a deep breath.
-
Identify a Change: Think about an upcoming change in your life. It could be big or small – a new school year, a new class, a new activity, a change in family dynamics, or even something like trying out for a team. Choose one that feels relevant to you right now. Don't worry about sharing it aloud.
-
Hold Your Telescope: Imagine you are holding a special telescope, an "Opportunity Telescope." It doesn't show you the bad things; it only helps you see potential for growth and positive outcomes.
-
Look Through the Lens: Point your telescope at that upcoming change. At first, you might just see the initial challenge or uncertainty. That's okay.
-
Zoom In on Growth: Now, slowly, use your imagination to zoom in. What new skills might you learn because of this change? What new people might you meet? What hidden strengths might you discover in yourself? How might this change make you more resilient, adaptable, or creative?
-
Visualize the Outcome: See yourself successfully navigating this change, thriving, and using the opportunities it presents. What does that successful scene look like?
-
Jot Down Opportunities: When you are ready, slowly open your eyes. On a piece of paper, privately jot down at least two growth opportunities that could emerge from the change you just visualized. Be specific! What exactly are those opportunities for you?
