Superhero School Rules Lesson Plan
Students will learn and practice the PBIS expectations—Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe—through interactive discussions, visual aids, and role-play to build a positive classroom culture.
Introducing PBIS expectations with a fun superhero theme engages 1st graders, clarifies behavior standards, and fosters respect, responsibility, and safety from day one.

Materials
- Printable Superhero Masks, - Superhero School Rules Poster Set, - Role-Play Scenario Cards, - Superhero Exit Ticket, and - Timer or Stopwatch
Prep
Prepare Materials
5 minutes
- Print and display Superhero School Rules Poster Set.
- Print and cut out Role-Play Scenario Cards.
- Make copies of the Superhero Exit Ticket for each student.
- Distribute Printable Superhero Masks at each desk.
- Set up a Timer or Stopwatch for activity timings.
Step 1
Warm-Up
2 minutes
- Greet students as superheroes and have them don their Printable Superhero Masks.
- Ask: “What makes someone a good superhero?”
- Guide answers toward respect, responsibility, and safety.
Step 2
Introduce Expectations
5 minutes
- Reveal the Superhero School Rules Poster Set one poster at a time.
- Read each rule aloud: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.
- Ask students to share examples of how a classroom superhero shows each behavior.
Step 3
Role-Play Practice
5 minutes
- Pair students and give each pair a Role-Play Scenario Card.
- Students act out the scenario demonstrating the correct expectation.
- Circulate and praise superhero behavior, offering prompts as needed.
Step 4
Closing & Exit Ticket
3 minutes
- Distribute the Superhero Exit Ticket.
- Students draw or write which rule they’ll practice today and one way they’ll do it.
- Collect tickets and commend each student for being classroom superheroes.

Welcome students as superheroes! Introduce yourself as their Superhero Guide. Say: “Today we’ll learn our Superhero School Rules so we can save the day by being respectful, responsible, and safe!”
Warm-Up: Superhero Brainstorm
What makes someone a good superhero?
Turn and talk with your neighbor.
Explain that even superheroes need rules. Say: “Let’s warm up our brains! Think of a superhero you know and what makes them great.”
Rule 1: Be Respectful
• Listen when others talk
• Use kind words
• Keep hands & feet to yourself
Reveal the Be Respectful poster from the Superhero School Rules Poster Set.
Ask volunteers for examples.
Rule 2: Be Responsible
• Follow directions right away
• Take care of our classroom and materials
• Complete tasks on time
Show the Be Responsible poster. Prompt: “How do superheroes take responsibility?”
Rule 3: Be Safe
• Walk in the classroom
• Use materials properly
• Keep yourself and others safe
Display the Be Safe poster. Ask: “Why is safety important for superheroes?”
Role-Play Practice
- Pair up and choose a Role-Play Scenario Card.
- Act out how a superhero follows the rule.
- Switch roles.
Explain the role-play activity. Model with a volunteer. Set a 2-minute timer.
Exit Ticket
Draw or write which rule you’ll practice today and one way you’ll use your superhero power.
Distribute the Superhero Exit Ticket. Give 1 minute for drawing or writing.
Great Job, Superheroes!
Remember: Be Respectful. Be Responsible. Be Safe.
Gather attention. Praise effort: “You all did a fantastic job practicing our superhero rules!”
Remind them to show their powers all day.
Activity
Role-Play Scenario Cards
Use these cards in pairs. Each pair picks a card, reads the scenario, and acts out how a classroom superhero follows the correct rule.
- Rule: Be Respectful
Scenario: One superhero is sharing a story, but the other keeps interrupting. Show how to be respectful by listening with eyes on the speaker and waiting your turn to talk. - Rule: Be Respectful
Scenario: Two superheroes both want the same block. Show respectful problem-solving by taking turns and using kind words. - Rule: Be Responsible
Scenario: A superhero notices crayons and paper left on the floor. Show responsibility by picking up and putting the materials back where they belong. - Rule: Be Responsible
Scenario: The teacher gives directions to line up quietly. Show responsibility by stopping your play, lining up right away, and staying in line. - Rule: Be Safe
Scenario: Superheroes are running to the water fountain. Show safety by walking in the classroom and keeping your hands to yourself. - Rule: Be Safe
Scenario: You need to cut construction paper for an art project. Show safety by holding scissors properly, pointing blades down, and cutting slowly.
