Warm Up: Hygiene Hero Challenge (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, Super Clean Heroes! Today, we're going on an adventure to learn how to keep ourselves healthy and super clean! Are you ready?"

Teacher: "Let's play a quick game called 'Hygiene Hero Challenge'! I'm going to say something, and you'll show me if it makes us CLEAN with a big thumbs up, or if it makes us DIRTY with a big thumbs down! Ready?"

  • Teacher: "Playing in the mud?" (Wait for responses, guide them to Thumbs Down. "That's right, mud can make us dirty!")
  • Teacher: "Washing your hands with soap and water?" (Wait for responses, guide them to Thumbs Up. "Yes! Super clean hands!")
  • Teacher: "Eating a yummy lollipop?" (Wait for responses, guide them to Thumbs to the side/neutral. "Lollipops are yummy, but they can make our hands sticky! We might need to wash up after!")
  • Teacher: "Taking a bath or shower?" (Wait for responses, guide them to Thumbs Up. "Splish, splash, getting clean!")
  • Teacher: "Sneezing without covering your mouth?" (Wait for responses, guide them to Thumbs Down. "Uh oh! Germs can fly everywhere! What should we do instead?") (Guide to covering with elbow)
  • Teacher: "Brushing your teeth?" (Wait for responses, guide them to Thumbs Up. "Sparkly smiles!")

Teacher: "Wow, you are already such smart hygiene heroes! Let's learn more about how we can be the best Super Clean Heroes!"

Introduction to Hygiene (10 minutes) - Refer to Super Clean Slides

Teacher: "Now, let's look at our special Super Clean Slides to learn even more!"

  • Slide 1: Super Clean Heroes!
Teacher: "Look at our first slide! We are going to learn all about being Super Clean Heroes and keeping ourselves healthy and happy!"

  • Slide 2: What is Hygiene?
Teacher: "Hygiene is a big word, but it just means keeping our bodies fresh and clean! Like taking care of a special toy, we need to take care of our bodies to keep them working great! Who can tell me one way they keep their body clean?"
    (Allow a few student responses)

  • Slide 3: Wash Your Hands!
Teacher: "Our hands touch so many things, don't they? Sometimes they pick up tiny, tiny germs we can't even see! But guess what? Soap and water are like superpowers that make those germs disappear! When should we wash our hands?"
(Point to bullet points on slide, explain each one: before eating, after sneezing/coughing, after bathroom, after playing outside. Emphasize scrubbing for 20 seconds, like singing 'Happy Birthday' twice.)

  • Slide 4: Brush Your Teeth!
Teacher: "Look at those shiny teeth! To keep them strong and healthy, we need to brush them. We brush away the tiny food bits and sugar bugs that try to live in our mouths. When do we brush our teeth?"
(Point to bullet points: morning and before bed. Talk about using a small amount of toothpaste and brushing all sides.)

  • Slide 5: Bath Time Fun!
Teacher: "After a day of playing and learning, our whole body can get a little dirty. That's why taking a bath or shower is super important! It washes away all the dirt and makes us feel so fresh! What do you use to get clean in the bath or shower?"
(Discuss soap and shampoo, rinsing well.)

  • Slide 6: Why is it important?
Teacher: "So, why do we do all these things? Why do we wash our hands, brush our teeth, and take baths? It helps us to:

    • Stay healthy – so we don't get sick!
    • Feel good – nobody likes to feel sticky or stinky!
    • Smell nice – so our friends like to play with us!
    • Stop germs from spreading!"

Germ Buster Game (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Alright, Super Clean Heroes! Are you ready for a mission to bust some germs? We're going to play the Germ Buster Game!"

  • Teacher: "I'll need two volunteers to be our 'Germs' (give them a small, safe object like a soft ball or a crumpled paper to represent germs). And everyone else will be 'Super Clean Hands'!"
  • Teacher: "The 'Germs' will gently tag the 'Super Clean Hands'. If you get tagged, you have a 'germ'! But don't worry, you can get rid of it by going to our 'Washing Station' (a designated spot in the room). At the washing station, you pretend to wash your hands for 20 seconds, and then you are clean again!"
  • Teacher: "If you get tagged, remember to act out washing your hands really well! We'll play for about 5 minutes, then we'll switch roles if we have time, or just discuss how important it is to wash away those germs!"
(Facilitate the game, ensuring it remains playful and focused on the hygiene message.)

My Clean Habits Worksheet (8 minutes)

Teacher: "Fantastic germ busting, everyone! Now, let's show off what we've learned on our My Clean Habits Worksheet."

  • Teacher: "I'm going to give each of you a special worksheet. On this worksheet, you can draw or circle pictures that show good clean habits. Can you show me how you wash your hands? Or brush your teeth? Or maybe take a bath?"
  • (Distribute worksheets and art supplies. Circulate and assist students. Encourage them to talk about their drawings.)

Wrap Up & Review (2 minutes)

Teacher: "Okay, Super Clean Heroes, let's quickly remember our super clean habits! What are some things we do to stay clean and healthy?"
(Prompt for handwashing, teeth brushing, bathing.)

Teacher: "You are all amazing Super Clean Heroes! Remember to practice these habits every single day, at school and at home, so you can stay strong, happy, and healthy! Great job today, everyone!"

Game

Germ Buster Game

Objective: To reinforce the importance of handwashing in a fun, active way.

Materials:

  • Two soft balls or crumpled paper balls (to represent "germs")
  • An open space in the classroom or outside

Instructions:

  1. Introduce the Game: "Alright, Super Clean Heroes! It's time for a Germ Buster mission! We're going to play a game where we fight off those sneaky germs!"
  2. Assign Roles:
    • Choose 2-3 students to be the "Germs." Give each "Germ" a soft ball or crumpled paper ball.
    • All other students are the "Super Clean Hands."
  3. Establish the "Washing Station": Designate a clear area in the classroom as the "Washing Station." This is where students go to get "clean."
  4. How to Play:
    • The "Germs" will gently try to tag the "Super Clean Hands" with their "germ balls." They should aim for arms or shoulders.
    • If a "Super Clean Hand" gets tagged, they now have a "germ"! To get rid of it, they must quickly go to the "Washing Station."
    • At the "Washing Station," the student must pretend to wash their hands thoroughly for 20 seconds (e.g., rub hands together, count to 20, or sing "Happy Birthday" twice).
    • Once they have "washed their hands," they are clean again and can rejoin the game as a "Super Clean Hand."
  5. Game Duration: Play for about 5-7 minutes. If time allows, switch roles so different students get to be "Germs."
  6. Reinforce Learning: After the game, discuss how it felt to have germs and how good it felt to get clean. Emphasize that real handwashing helps us stay healthy just like in the game.
