Welcome, Little Mathematicians!
Let's explore addition with our animal pals!
Welcome students and introduce the fun topic! Ask them if they have a favorite animal. Briefly explain that today we'll be adding with our animal friends.
What is Addition?
Addition is putting groups together to find a total.
It's like counting how many you have in ALL!
Explain that addition means putting groups together. Use your hands to demonstrate combining two groups. Ask: "What do you get when you put 1 apple and 1 apple together?"
Meet Our Math Symbols!
The + sign means ADD.
The = sign means EQUALS or the TOTAL.
Introduce the plus sign. Say: "This is the plus sign! It tells us to add." Then introduce the equals sign. Say: "This is the equals sign! It tells us that what's on one side is the same as what's on the other side."
Bunny Bonanza!
3 bunnies + 2 bunnies = ?
Present the first problem. Say: "Look! We have 3 fluffy bunnies and 2 hopping bunnies. How many bunnies are there in total?" Encourage students to count along with you. Write 3 + 2 = 5 on the board.
Duck Dive!
4 ducks + 3 ducks = ?
Present the second problem. Say: "Now we have 4 happy ducks in one pond and 3 more join them. How many ducks are there now?" Guide students to count all the ducks. Write 4 + 3 = 7 on the board.
Bear Hugs!
5 bears + 1 bear = ?
Encourage students to use their manipulatives for this problem. Say: "Let's try this one together. Get your counting bears ready! If you have 5 bears and add 1 more, how many do you have?" Write 5 + 1 = 6 on the board.
Fishy Friends!
6 fish + 4 fish = ?
Ask students to work in pairs or independently to solve this. Say: "Can you figure out how many fish there are in total?" After a minute, call on students to share their answers. Write 6 + 4 = 10 on the board.
You're Addition Superstars!
You learned to put groups together and find the total.
Keep practicing, and you'll be addition experts!
Review what addition is and how to use the plus and equals signs. Briefly introduce the upcoming game. Say: "Great job adding today! Get ready to play 'Addition Bingo Blast' to practice even more!"
Game
Addition Bingo Blast!
Objective: Practice and reinforce basic addition facts within 10 in a fun, interactive game.
Materials Needed:
- Addition Bingo Cards (Teacher-prepared): Each student needs one card with a 3x3 or 4x4 grid. Fill the squares with sums between 0 and 10 (e.g., 2, 5, 7, 10, 3, 8, 1, 9, 4, 6, 0). Make sure to vary the numbers on each card. You can repeat numbers if needed.
- Counters (beans, small erasers, torn paper pieces) for each student
- List of addition problems (sums within 10) for the teacher to call out.
How to Play:
-
Preparation (5 minutes):
- Hand out one Addition Bingo Card (Teacher-prepared) and a handful of counters to each student.
- Explain that the goal is to get a "Bingo" by covering a row, column, or diagonal of sums.
-
Game On! (15-20 minutes):
- The teacher will call out an addition problem (e.g., "What is 3 plus 2?").
- Students quickly solve the problem in their heads or using their manipulatives.
- If the sum is on their Addition Bingo Card (Teacher-prepared), they place a counter on that number.
- The teacher should pause briefly after each problem to allow students time to solve and cover their numbers.
-
Bingo!:
- The first student to get a Bingo (3 or 4 in a row/column/diagonal, depending on card size) shouts "BINGO!"
- The student must then read aloud the addition problems that led to their Bingo to verify their answers.
- Continue playing for more Bingos or reset cards for a new round.

Answer Key
Plus Puzzles Answer Key
Here are the answers to the Plus Puzzles Practice worksheet.
Part 1: Solve the Addition Problems
-
2 + 3 = 5
- Thought Process: Starting with 2, count up 3 more: 3, 4, 5.
-
4 + 1 = 5
- Thought Process: Starting with 4, count up 1 more: 5.
-
5 + 0 = 5
- Thought Process: Adding 0 to any number means the number stays the same.
-
1 + 6 = 7
- Thought Process: Starting with 6, count up 1 more: 7.
-
3 + 4 = 7
- Thought Process: Starting with 4, count up 3 more: 5, 6, 7.
-
7 + 2 = 9
- Thought Process: Starting with 7, count up 2 more: 8, 9.
-
0 + 8 = 8
- Thought Process: Adding 0 to any number means the number stays the same.
-
5 + 5 = 10
- Thought Process: This is a doubles fact. 5 fingers on one hand, 5 on the other, makes 10.
-
6 + 3 = 9
- Thought Process: Starting with 6, count up 3 more: 7, 8, 9.
-
2 + 7 = 9
