Study Superpowers! Lesson Plan

Students will learn and apply key study skills—setting SMART goals, managing study time effectively, and using structured note-taking methods—to enhance their academic performance.

Developing effective study skills empowers students to take ownership of their learning, reduces stress, and boosts confidence across all subjects, laying the foundation for long-term academic success.

Audience

10th Grade Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive discussion and hands-on practice

Materials

Study Skills Worksheet, - Sticky Notes, - Pens or Pencils, - Timer (Digital or Physical), and - Whiteboard and Markers

Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

  • Review the sections of the Study Skills Worksheet to familiarize yourself with the activities.
  • Print enough copies of the worksheet for each student.
  • Gather sticky notes and ensure each student has a pen or pencil.
  • Set up a timer (digital or physical) and clear the whiteboard with fresh markers.
  • Plan examples of SMART goals and time-management scenarios to share.

Step 1

Introduction & Icebreaker

5 minutes

  • Welcome students and introduce today’s focus: mastering study superpowers.
  • Ask volunteers to share one study habit they already use.
  • Highlight how goal setting, time management, and note-taking will strengthen their learning.

Step 2

Goal-Setting Activity

7 minutes

  • Distribute the Study Skills Worksheet.
  • Guide students through the SMART goals section:
    • Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound
  • Have students draft one academic goal on their worksheet.
  • Invite 2–3 students to briefly share their goals with the class.

Step 3

Time-Management Strategy

7 minutes

  • On the whiteboard, outline a sample study schedule (e.g., Pomodoro Technique).
  • Explain how to break tasks into timed intervals and short breaks.
  • Set the timer for a 2-minute mini-practice: students plan their next study session on their worksheet.
  • Discuss how this approach reduces procrastination and boosts focus.

Step 4

Note-Taking Techniques

7 minutes

  • Introduce at least two methods (e.g., Cornell Notes, Mind Mapping) on the whiteboard.
  • Demonstrate by summarizing a brief paragraph from the worksheet.
  • Ask students to choose one method and practice taking notes on a provided excerpt.
  • Pair-share: students compare notes and discuss what helped them capture key ideas.

Step 5

Reflection & Action Plan

4 minutes

  • Hand out sticky notes.
  • Prompt students to write one action they will implement this week (e.g., using a timer, starting Cornell Notes).
  • Students post their notes on the board under the headings: Goals, Time Management, Notes.
  • Close by reinforcing that small, consistent steps build strong study habits.

Study Superpowers!

Master your study skills to boost academic success.

• Goal Setting
• Time Management
• Note-Taking Techniques

Welcome everyone! Today we’re unlocking your Study Superpowers. Briefly introduce yourself and the session goal: learning goal setting, time management, and note-taking. Encourage engagement—this is interactive, so feel free to share ideas.

Introduction & Icebreaker

• Share one study habit you already use.
• Why good habits matter.
• Today’s focus: Goals • Time • Notes

Icebreaker: Ask 2–3 volunteers to share one study habit they already use. Highlight how habits form the basis for improvement. Transition by saying: “Next, let’s supercharge our goals.”

Goal-Setting Activity

SMART Goals:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Achievable
• Relevant
• Time-Bound

→ Draft your academic goal on the worksheet.

Distribute the Study Skills Worksheet. Explain each SMART element with examples (e.g., “I will review biology notes for 20 minutes, three times this week”). Give students 3–4 minutes to draft their own goal, then invite 2–3 to share.

Time-Management Strategy

Pomodoro Technique:
• 25 min focused work
• 5 min break

2-Minute Practice:
Plan your next study session on the worksheet.

Draw or project a Pomodoro timer example: 25-minute focus, 5-minute break. Explain why short bursts beat marathon sessions. Set a 2-minute timer and have students plan their next study block on the worksheet. Debrief benefits.

Note-Taking Techniques

Choose one method:

Cornell Notes:
• Cues | Notes | Summary

Mind Mapping:
• Central idea + branches

→ Practice on provided excerpt.

Introduce Cornell Notes: divide page into cues, notes, summary. Show a quick sample. Then Mind Mapping: central idea with branches. Ask students to pick one and practice with a short excerpt (provided). Pair them to compare.

Reflection & Action Plan

• Write one action step on a sticky note.
• Post under:
– Goals
– Time Management
– Notes

→ Commit to your superpower.

Hand out sticky notes. Prompt: “Write one action you’ll implement this week under Goals, Time Management, or Notes.” Once posted, review a few. Reinforce: consistent small steps build habits.

Congratulations!

You’ve unlocked your Study Superpowers:

• Clear goals
• Focused time blocks
• Effective notes

Small steps → Big impact!

Congratulate students on committing to new strategies. Encourage them to track progress and revisit SMART goals weekly. End on a high note and invite any final questions.

Number of Cycles: _____________________________________

3. Note-Taking Practice

Read the excerpt below and choose either the Cornell Notes template or the Mind Map template to capture the key ideas.

Excerpt:
"Active studying involves processing information in a way that helps you understand and remember it. This includes summarizing ideas in your own words, making connections with prior knowledge, and asking yourself questions. Techniques like Cornell Notes and mind mapping can structure your notes to make reviewing easier and more effective."
