Lesson Plan

Storytime Superpowers Lesson Plan

Students will explore social story scenarios about sharing and turn-taking, practice strategies through an interactive activity, and reflect on how to apply these skills in real life.

Young learners often feel anxious during social interactions; this lesson builds empathy, reduces anxiety, and equips students with concrete strategies for common classroom challenges.

Audience

Kindergarten–2nd Grade Students

Time

45 minutes

Approach

Storytelling, guided discussion, hands-on practice

Materials

Storytime Scenarios Activity, and Social Strategy Reflection Worksheet

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Print enough copies of Storytime Scenarios Activity and Social Strategy Reflection Worksheet for each student or pair
  • Review each scenario and corresponding recommended strategy
  • Arrange seating in a circle or semi-circle for group discussion
  • Prepare a timer or use a classroom clock for activity rotations

Step 1

Introduction & Warm-Up

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle and introduce today’s focus on sharing and waiting turns
  • Ask: “How do you feel when you have to wait for your turn?”
  • Explain that they’ll hear short stories about characters who face the same challenges

Step 2

Read Aloud Social Stories

10 minutes

  • Present two brief social stories (verbal or projected) featuring characters Alex and Maya
  • After each story, ask students to identify the problem (sharing or waiting) and how the character felt
  • Highlight the coping strategy used (e.g., deep breath, asking politely, using a timer)

Step 3

Guided Group Discussion

10 minutes

  • Display scenarios from Storytime Scenarios Activity
  • In pairs or small groups, have students discuss how they would help the character
  • Invite volunteers to share their ideas and reinforce positive strategies
  • Emphasize listening and taking turns during discussion

Step 4

Hands-On Role-Play Activity

15 minutes

  • Distribute Storytime Scenarios Activity cards to pairs or small groups
  • Students take roles (character, helper) and act out the scenario using the strategy
  • Circulate and prompt groups with questions: “How can you use your words?” or “What can you do while you wait?”
  • After 7 minutes, rotate cards so each group practices a different scenario

Step 5

Reflection & Worksheet

5 minutes

  • Hand out Social Strategy Reflection Worksheet
  • Ask students to draw or write which strategy they’ll try next time they share or wait
  • Invite a few students to show their worksheet and explain their plan
  • Praise all efforts and remind students to use their new “superpowers” every day

Activity

Storytime Scenarios Activity

Use these scenario cards in pairs or small groups. Read the scenario, discuss the questions, then role-play using the suggested directions.

Card 1: Sharing the Red Truck

Scenario: Alex and Sam both want to play with the same red truck during center time.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What can Alex say to Sam to ask for a turn?

  2. How do you think Sam feels when Alex asks? Why?

Role-Play Directions:

  • Student A is Alex and asks: “Sam, can I have a turn when you’re done?”
  • Student B is Sam and decides to share now or choose a time to switch.
  • Switch roles and try using a deep breath or timer if there’s a wait.

Card 2: Sharing Crayons

Scenario: Maya has the blue crayon everyone loves. Jordan wants to draw with it too.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What could Maya say to Jordan?

  2. What could Jordan say if Maya needs three more minutes?

Role-Play Directions:

  • Student A (Maya) practices saying: “I’ll share in three minutes. Can you color something else while you wait?”
  • Student B (Jordan) practices responding: “Sure! I’ll draw with green first, then it’s your turn.”
  • Swap roles and try using a timer or asking an adult for help.

Card 3: Waiting for the Swing

Scenario: Liam is waiting in line for the school swing. He’s really excited but impatient.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What can Liam do while he waits?

  2. How might counting or singing help him?

Role-Play Directions:

  • Student A plays Liam and practices counting to 10 or naming colors of the playground while waiting.
  • Student B plays a friend in line and reminds Liam: “Let’s count together!”
  • Switch and pick a different coping strategy (deep breath, gentle stretch).

Card 4: Waiting Your Turn in a Game

Scenario: Emma and Carlos are playing a board game. Emma finished her turn quickly and now must wait.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What can Emma do to stay calm while waiting?

  2. How can Carlos let Emma know when it’s her turn?

Role-Play Directions:

  • Student A (Emma) practices drawing a quick doodle or quietly talking about her next move.
  • Student B (Carlos) practices saying: “Emma, your turn now!” when the time comes.
  • Swap roles and try a different waiting strategy (deep breath, counting).

Printers: Cut along the lines to create individual cards. Use with Storytime Superpowers Lesson Plan for guided discussion and role-play rotations.
