Stepping into Creativity

Create Garden Stepping Stones

In this lesson, students will engage in a hands-on project to create personalized garden stepping stones. This activity encourages creativity, teamwork, and practical skills as students work together to design and craft their own stepping stones. Cement mix, Water, Mixing containers, Molds for stepping stones, Decorative items (e.g., stones, tiles, glass beads), Protective gloves, Aprons, Plastic sheets, and Discussion Guide

Step 1

Introduction

10 mins

  • Welcome students and introduce the project: creating garden stepping stones.
  • Discuss the purpose of stepping stones in gardens and how they can be both functional and decorative.
  • Explain the steps involved in making the stones and the materials they will use.

Step 2

Design Planning

15 mins

  • Have students brainstorm and sketch their designs on paper.
  • Encourage them to think about colors, patterns, and any symbols or initials they might want to include.
  • Discuss the importance of teamwork and collaboration in sharing ideas.

Step 3

Creating Stepping Stones

35 mins

  • Distribute materials and ensure students are wearing protective gloves and aprons.
  • Guide students in mixing the cement according to instructions.
  • Assist students in pouring the cement into molds and adding their decorative items.
  • Allow time for students to adjust their designs as needed.

Step 4

Clean-Up and Setting

  • Instruct students to clean their work areas and wash their hands.
  • Place the stepping stones in a safe area to set and dry.
  • Discuss the drying process and how long it will take for the stones to be ready.
