Steps to Success

Today’s agenda:

  1. Define a SMART routine goal
  2. Choose a mini habit challenge
  3. Record progress daily
  4. Reflect and plan next steps

Welcome the student. Briefly review the session objective: building a daily routine through goal-setting and tracking. Explain that this deck will guide them through each step.

1. Define Your SMART Goal

SMART stands for:
• Specific: Clear and focused
• Measurable: Trackable progress
• Achievable: Realistic for you
• Relevant: Linked to your routine
• Time-bound: Has a deadline

What part of your routine will you improve?

Introduce SMART goals. Ask the student to name one routine they’d like to improve (e.g., starting homework on time). Offer sentence starters as needed.

2. Mini Habit Challenge

Choose one small habit that supports your goal:
• e.g., 5 minutes of quiet reading after school
• e.g., laying out homework materials before dinner
Write your mini habit below:

Explain that a mini habit is a tiny, manageable action tied to the big goal. Guide the student to pick one small step they can commit to each day.

3. Track Your Progress

Use your daily tracker to record:
• Date
• Did I complete my mini habit? ✅ or ❌
• Quick note on how it went

Track every day this week!

Show the My Daily Tracker Worksheet. Model how to mark each day when the habit is done. Encourage honesty and consistency.

4. Reflect & Plan Ahead

At week’s end, rate yourself:

  1. How well did I stick to my habit?
  2. What helped me succeed?
  3. What challenges did I face?

Use these insights to set your next goal.

Introduce the Routine Reflection Rubric. Prompt the student to self-assess and brainstorm one adjustment for improvement.

Activity

Mini Habit Challenge Activity

Objective: Guide the student to select a tiny, manageable daily habit that supports their SMART routine goal and commit to tracking it each day.

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. Brainstorm Habits (2 minutes)
    • Together, list 4–5 very small actions that could support the student’s routine goal.
    – e.g., placing homework folder on desk, reading one page, laying out tomorrow’s clothes.

  2. Choose Your Mini Habit (3 minutes)
    • Ask the student to pick the simplest habit they feel they can do every day, even on busy days.
    • Have them state it in one sentence: “I will _____.”

  3. Specify When & Where (3 minutes)
    • Identify a clear trigger (e.g., right after school, before dinner).
    • Write down exactly when and where they’ll do it.

  4. Quick Trial & Role-Play (4 minutes)
    • Role-play or verbally walk through the action once.
    • Prompt: “Show me how you’ll remember and do this habit.”

  5. Record Commitment (3 minutes)
    • Have the student write their mini habit at the top of the My Daily Tracker Worksheet.
    • Choose a symbol (star, checkmark) they’ll use each day to mark completion.

Reflection Check (3 minutes):

  • Ask: “On a scale of 1–5, how confident are you that you can do this mini habit every day this week?”
  • Record the confidence rating on the worksheet and discuss one support or reminder that might help if confidence is low.

Next Steps:

  • Confirm the plan, set a reminder (alarm or sticky note), and schedule the next check-in to review the tracker and reflections.
