Lesson Plan

Safety One-on-One Lesson

Equip adult learners with practical personal safety skills—develop situational awareness, assess risks, and create an action plan for everyday scenarios.

Personal safety skills empower adults to recognize hazards early and respond confidently, reducing vulnerability and enhancing well-being.

Audience

Adult Learners

Time

15 minutes

Approach

Brief scenario-based discussion and guided planning.

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction and Objective

2 minutes

  • Greet the learner and explain the session’s goal: building personal safety skills.
  • Highlight the three focus areas: situational awareness, risk assessment, and action planning.
  • Emphasize real-world relevance and confidentiality of the discussion.

Step 2

Situational Awareness Activity

5 minutes

  • Present a scenario from the Personal Safety Scenarios Handout.
  • Ask the learner to list observable cues (environment, behavior, exits).
  • Discuss how increased awareness can prevent or mitigate threats.

Step 3

Risk Assessment Discussion

4 minutes

  • Choose a second scenario and guide the learner to identify potential risks and their severity.
  • Explore questions: Who might be at risk? What factors increase danger? Can risks be reduced?
  • Encourage the learner to verbalize their thought process.

Step 4

Action Planning Exercise

3 minutes

  • Provide the Safety Action Plan Template.
  • Have the learner outline steps they would take in one of the discussed scenarios (escape routes, seeking help, de-escalation techniques).
  • Offer feedback to refine the plan for clarity and feasibility.

Step 5

Wrap-Up and Next Steps

1 minute

  • Summarize key takeaways: stay alert, evaluate risks, and plan actions.
  • Encourage the learner to practice these skills in everyday situations.
  • Offer to review or adjust the plan in a follow-up if desired.

Slide Deck

Stay Safe, Stay Smart

• A 15-minute one-on-one personal safety session for adults
• Focus areas: Situational Awareness – Risk Assessment – Action Planning
• Confidential and practical discussion

Welcome the learner. Introduce yourself and explain this 15-minute one-on-one session, “Stay Safe, Stay Smart.” Emphasize that the focus is on situational awareness, risk assessment, and action planning for everyday safety.

Session Objectives

By the end of this session, you will:

• Recognize environmental and behavioral warning signs
• Assess potential risks and their severity
• Develop a clear action plan using a structured template

Briefly explain why each objective matters. Ask the learner if they have ever noticed subtle cues in their surroundings or considered a safety plan.

1. Situational Awareness

• Review a real-life scenario
• Identify observable cues:
– Environment (lighting, exits, obstacles)
– People’s behavior and body language
• Discuss how these cues help you stay alert

Hand the learner the Personal Safety Scenarios Handout. Read the first scenario together. Prompt them to list what they see, hear, or feel that might signal danger.

2. Risk Assessment

• Analyze a second scenario
• Identify potential threats and their severity
• Ask yourself:
– Who could be harmed?
– What factors increase danger?
– How could risks be reduced?

Select a different scenario from the handout. Ask probing questions: Who is most at risk? What makes this situation dangerous? Could any risks be minimized?

3. Action Planning

• Use the Safety Action Plan Template to outline:
– Steps to take in an emergency
– Possible escape routes or safe spots
– How and when to seek help
– Simple de-escalation techniques

Give the learner the Safety Action Plan Template. Walk them through filling out each section for one chosen scenario: escape routes, help-seeking, de-escalation.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

• Key Takeaways: Stay alert • Evaluate risks • Plan actions
• Practice these skills in daily routines
• Request a follow-up session to review or adjust your plan

Summarize the three focus areas. Encourage the learner to practice these strategies in everyday contexts and offer follow-up support if they want to refine their plan.
