Stand Up Speak Out Lesson Plan

Students will identify various bullying behaviors and develop a personalized action plan with concrete strategies to recognize, respond to, and prevent bullying.

By creating an individualized action plan, students gain confidence to advocate for themselves and others, promoting safety and empathy in the school community.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Define bullying and its different forms (physical, verbal, social, cyber).
  • Discuss why it’s important to stand up and speak out.
  • Ask the student to share any observations or personal experiences with bullying.

Step 2

Scenario Analysis

10 minutes

  • Provide the student with the Bullying Scenarios Worksheet.
  • Read through each scenario together.
  • For each, have the student identify the type of bullying and possible immediate responses.
  • Discuss the potential impact of each response on everyone involved.

Step 3

Action Plan Development

10 minutes

  • Introduce the Personalized Action Plan Template.
  • Guide the student to list trusted adults they can approach.
  • Brainstorm specific strategies they can use when they witness or experience bullying (e.g., assertive phrases, safe exit plans).
  • Have the student fill in steps, resources, and reminders on the template.

Step 4

Reflection and Commitment

5 minutes

  • Ask the student to reflect on the most helpful strategy they created.
  • Have them commit to using at least one new strategy this week.
  • Sign off together: teacher and student initial the plan.
  • Encourage the student to keep the plan accessible and review it regularly.

Develop Your Personalized Bullying Action Plan

Welcome the student to the session. Introduce the purpose: developing a personalized bullying action plan. Emphasize confidentiality and open communication.

What is Bullying?

  • Physical: hitting, pushing
  • Verbal: name-calling, threats
  • Social: exclusion, spreading rumors
  • Cyber: online harassment

Define bullying: explain physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying. Use examples relevant to the student's experience.

Why Stand Up & Speak Out?

  • Protect yourself and others

  • Promote empathy and respect

Discuss why standing up to bullying is important: builds confidence, protects others, and fosters a positive environment.

Scenario Analysis

Introduce the Bullying Scenarios Worksheet. Guide the student to read each scenario, identify the type of bullying, and consider possible responses.

Action Plan Development

  • List trusted adults to approach
  • Brainstorm strategies (assertive phrases, safe exits)
  • Fill in steps, resources, and reminders

Walk the student through the Personalized Action Plan Template. Encourage listing trusted adults and specific strategies.
