Slide Deck

Stand Up, Speak Out

A 15-minute lesson on Cyberbullying
for 6th Grade Students

Let’s learn how to stand up and speak out against digital hurt!

Welcome everyone! Today we’re launching into cyberbullying—what it is and why it matters. Use this slide to grab attention and set expectations for our 15-minute lesson. Encourage students to get ready to share and participate.

What Is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is:
• Using digital devices to hurt or harass others
• Sending mean or threatening messages or posts
• Spreading rumors or sharing embarrassing content online

Explain that cyberbullying means using digital devices—phones, tablets, computers—to hurt, embarrass, or harass someone. Write key words on the board as you define them, then invite questions.

Class Discussion

Have you ever seen or experienced mean messages or posts online?

• How did it make you feel?
• Why does it matter if we stay silent?

Facilitate a whole-class discussion. Ask students to raise hands and share brief examples or feelings. Capture key themes (fear, sadness, isolation) on the board under headings like “How It Feels” and “Why It Matters.”

Quick Activity

  1. In pairs, pick a scenario card
  2. Read: What’s happening?
  3. Discuss: How would you respond or speak up?

Materials: Cyberbullying Scenario Cards

Explain the activity and distribute the Cyberbullying Scenario Cards. Pair up students. Circulate and prompt with questions: “How would you respond?”, “What words would you use?”

Reflection & Closing

  1. Write one concrete action you’ll take if you see cyberbullying
  2. Share with the class (if you’d like!)

Material: Stand Up Speak Out Reflection Sheet

Hand out the Stand Up Speak Out Reflection Sheet. Give students 1–2 minutes to write their action. Invite volunteers to share one commitment. Summarize that small actions build a kinder online community.

Worksheet

Cyberbullying Scenario Cards

Cut out each card and give one to each pair for discussion.

Scenario 1
Lena’s friend group chat has 12 kids. Last week someone posted an unflattering photo of Lena at a birthday party. The caption says, “Look at this dork!” and a few classmates reacted with laughing emojis. Lena doesn’t know who posted it and feels embarrassed.

Scenario 2
Marcus sees a rumor spreading on the class social media page: “I heard Sarah cheated on the math test by looking at someone else’s paper.” Several students are commenting and tagging their friends to read it.

Scenario 3
During a group project, Maya set up an online document for everyone to comment. Two teammates post polite suggestions, but one kid leaves a nasty note: “You’re terrible at this—just leave.” Maya feels hurt and wonders if she should respond.

Scenario 4
Alex gets an anonymous direct message: “No one wants you here. Go away!” It pops up on his phone at home. He doesn’t know who sent it and feels scared to check social media again.

Scenario 5
A student made a funny meme using a screenshot of Jamal’s video game avatar, adding a mocking caption. They’ve shared it in a gaming group online, and people keep reposting it.

Scenario 6
Someone edited a text conversation to make it look like Nina insulted the teacher. They posted the fake screenshot in the class chat, and now people believe Nina was disrespectful.

For each scenario, discuss with your partner:

  1. What is happening here?
  2. How do you think the person being targeted feels?
  3. What could you say or do to stand up and speak out safely and respectfully?
