Speedy Fact Fiesta Lesson Plan

Students will improve addition and subtraction fact fluency through timed drills and targeted practice, aiming to solve at least 20 mixed facts correctly in two minutes. They will identify and correct errors using personalized feedback to build confidence.

Fluency in basic math facts underpins problem solving and supports higher-level math. This individualized session offers intensive, targeted support to address gaps and boost confidence.

Prep

Prepare Materials

5 minutes

  • Print and organize Addition and Subtraction Flashcards.
  • Charge or set up the Fact Fluency Timer.
  • Make copies of the Error Tracking Chart and Fact Fiesta Feedback Rubric.
  • Review the feedback rubric to guide conferencing.

Step 1

Warm-Up

5 minutes

  • Show 5 mixed facts using Addition and Subtraction Flashcards.
  • Student answers orally; teacher notes responses.
  • Record accuracy and response speed on the Error Tracking Chart.

Step 2

Timed Drill Round 1

5 minutes

  • Set the Fact Fluency Timer for 2 minutes.
  • Student solves as many flashcards as possible in that time.
  • After time ends, count correct answers and record on the Error Tracking Chart.
  • Use remaining time to glance at recorded errors.

Step 3

Feedback and Error Analysis

5 minutes

  • Review recorded errors with the student using the Error Tracking Chart.
  • Apply the Fact Fiesta Feedback Rubric to guide discussion.
  • Identify the top 3 facts to target next.

Step 4

Timed Drill Round 2

5 minutes

  • Reset the Fact Fluency Timer for 2 minutes.
  • Student repeats the drill, focusing on the identified target facts.
  • Record new score on the Error Tracking Chart.

Step 5

Targeted Practice

7 minutes

  • Pull only the missed flashcards from Addition and Subtraction Flashcards.
  • Student practices these facts until accuracy improves, using quick verbal repetition and flashcard flipping.
  • Teacher provides immediate corrective feedback guided by the rubric.

Step 6

Reflection and Goal Setting

3 minutes

  • Student reflects on progress and notes improvements.
  • Together, set a measurable fluency goal (e.g., 25 correct in 2 minutes) on the Error Tracking Chart.
  • Encourage the student to self-monitor progress before the next session.

  • Identify 3 facts to target in the next drill

Use the Feedback Rubric to guide discussion. Keep it positive and focused.

Timed Drill Round 2 (5 min)

  • Reset the timer for 2 minutes
  • Focus on the 3 target facts
  • Record the new score on the Error Tracking Chart

Refocus the student on the targeted facts. Encourage improvement.

Targeted Practice (7 min)

  • Practice only the missed flashcards
  • Use quick verbal repetition and card flips
  • Teacher offers immediate feedback guided by the rubric

Provide immediate corrective feedback. Celebrate small wins.

Reflection & Goal Setting (3 min)

  • Reflect on today’s progress
  • Set a measurable fluency goal (e.g., 25 correct in 2 minutes)
  • Record the goal on the Error Tracking Chart

Help the student reflect and set a clear goal for next time.
