Lesson Plan

Sound Masters Session Plan

In a 60-minute individual session, AA will practice correct production of target phonemes by suppressing gliding and cluster reduction, producing /l/ in isolation and syllables, and producing /r/ (including vocalic /r/) in words, achieving 80% accuracy.

Correct production of these phonemes will improve AA’s speech intelligibility, reduce phonological errors, and support his confidence in communication.

Audience

7th Grade Individual Student (Tier 3)

Time

60 minutes

Approach

Structured drill and play-based activities with immediate feedback

Materials

  • Gliding Word Cards, - Cluster Reduction Word Cards, - L Phoneme Isolation Practice Worksheet, - R Phoneme Word List with Vocalic R, - Artic Adventure Online Game, - Mirror and Oral-Motor Tools, - Whiteboard and Dry-Erase Markers, and - Data Recording Sheet

Prep

Prepare Materials and Environment

10 minutes

  • Print and organize Gliding Word Cards and Cluster Reduction Word Cards into separate decks

Step 1

Warm-Up and Oral-Motor Check

5 minutes

  • Use mirror to have AA perform tongue elevation, lateralization, and lip rounding exercises

Step 2

Gliding Suppression Drill

15 minutes

  • Present target words from Gliding Word Cards (e.g., 'rabbit', 'yellow')

Step 3

Cluster Reduction Drill

10 minutes

  • Use Cluster Reduction Word Cards (e.g., 'spin', 'clap')

Step 4

/l/ Isolation & Syllable Practice

10 minutes

  • Guide AA through L Phoneme Isolation Practice Worksheet in isolation, then CV (/la/, /el/) and VC (/al/) syllables

Step 5

/r/ and Vocalic /r/ Production

15 minutes

  • Drill words from R Phoneme Word List with Vocalic R (e.g., 'red', 'butter', 'car')

Step 6

Reinforcement with Online Game

5 minutes

  • Have AA play Artic Adventure Online Game to reinforce correct sounds

Sound Masters: 60-Minute Session

Individual Speech Therapy for AA (7th grade)
Target: Gliding, Cluster Reduction, /l/ & /r/ sounds
Goal: 80% accuracy in word-level productions

Welcome AA! Introduce today’s session: “Sound Masters.” Explain that we will practice making four tricky sounds and have fun along the way.

Session Objectives

  1. Suppress gliding in words (e.g., /wabbit/ → “rabbit”)
  2. Suppress cluster reduction (e.g., “spin” vs. “pin”)
  3. Produce /l/ in isolation & syllables (CV & VC)
  4. Produce /r/ & vocalic /r/ accurately

Review each objective aloud. Ask AA to repeat them to ensure he knows what we’re working on.

Materials & Setup

• Mirror & oral-motor tools
• Gliding Word Cards
• Cluster Reduction Word Cards
• L Phoneme Isolation Worksheet
• R Phoneme Word List
• Whiteboard, markers
• Data recording sheet

Briefly show materials laid out. Confirm AA has mirror; prepare word cards.

Warm-Up & Oral-Motor Check (5 min)

• Tongue elevation & lateralization
• Lip rounding & retraction
• Repeat each 5× while watching in mirror

Guide AA through mirror exercises: tongue tip up/down, lateralization, lip rounding. Observe and model as needed.

Gliding Suppression Drill (15 min)

• Use Gliding Word Cards
• Target words: rabbit, yellow, window, flower, liquid…
• Drill each word 5× with cueing

Model each word slowly. Provide immediate feedback: “Listen—rabbit, rabbit.” Have AA practice 10 target words.

Cluster Reduction Drill (10 min)

• Use Cluster Reduction Word Cards
• Example words: spin, clap, skate, truck, blink…
• Drill in sets of 5, provide mirror feedback

Demonstrate correct cluster productions. Encourage AA to feel the blend. Praise attempts.

/l/ Isolation & Syllable Practice (10 min)

  1. /l/ in isolation (draw tongue tip forward)
  2. CV syllables: la, le, li, lo, lu
  3. VC syllables: al, el, il, ol, ul

First model isolation /l/. Then CV (/la/, /el/) and VC (/al/)—use visual cues (“touch your alveolar ridge”).

/r/ & Vocalic /r/ Production (15 min)

• Use R Phoneme Word List
• Consonantal /r/: red, rock, rabbit…
• Vocalic /r/: butter, car, teacher…
• Drill 5 words × 5 reps each

Shape /r/ by starting from /ɝ/ vowel. Use hand cues (pull tongue back). Drill both consonantal & vocalic forms.

Reinforcement: Online Game (5 min)

• Play Artic Adventure Online Game
• Focus on target sounds
• Record correct/incorrect responses

Introduce the online game briefly. Monitor AA’s productions and record accuracy. Keep it under 5 minutes.

Data Recording & Next Steps

• Record accuracy for each target
• Note any residual errors
• Plan follow-up drills for next session

Review AA’s accuracy data. Discuss successes. Set next session’s focus based on data.

Worksheet

L Phoneme Isolation Practice Worksheet

Student Name: _________________________ Date: ___________

Instructions:

  • Use a mirror to watch your tongue tip.
  • Feel the tip of your tongue touch the alveolar ridge (just behind your upper front teeth).
  • Produce each sound slowly and clearly.

Part 1: Isolation

Say the /l/ sound by itself 5 times. Then practice and write it on the line below.

/l/ /l/ /l/ /l/ /l/

Part 2: CV Syllables

Say each syllable, then write it and repeat 3 times.

  1. la Write: ________ Reps: ( ) ( ) ( )

  2. le Write: ________ Reps: ( ) ( ) ( )

  3. li Write: ________ Reps: ( ) ( ) ( )

  4. lo Write: ________ Reps: ( ) ( ) ( )

  5. lu Write: ________ Reps: ( ) ( ) ( )

Part 3: VC Syllables

Say each syllable, then write it and repeat 3 times.

  5. ul Write: ________ Reps: ( ) ( ) ( )

Tips for Accurate /l/ Production

  • Keep the sides of your tongue touching your back teeth.
  • Only the tip of your tongue should lift up.
  • Practice in front of a mirror, using a slow, clear motion.

Good luck! Keep practicing and track your accuracy on each try.
