Step 1

  • Present common social challenges (shyness, anxiety, aggression) using the Social Support Toolkit Slides.
  • Facilitate a brainstorm: in pairs, teachers list behaviors they’ve observed and potential triggers.
  • Debrief as a whole group, capturing key points on chart paper.

Implementing Peer Pairing

15 minutes

  • Explain structured peer pairing benefits (e.g., interest-based buddies, mixed-ability teams).
  • Share examples and success stories via slides.
  • In grade-level groups, teachers design two pairing strategies and list potential pros/cons on chart paper.
  • Groups rotate and add feedback to each other’s charts.

Structured Role-Play Exercises

  • In small groups of 4–5, teachers select a scenario, role-play facilitation steps, and practice guiding students through the interaction.

  • Present key praise techniques: behavior-specific feedback, public recognition, and token acknowledgments via slides.

  • In pairs, teachers craft 2–3 praise statements for shy, anxious, and aggressive behaviors and role-play delivering them.

Reflection and Action Planning

20 minutes

  • Provide the Implementation Reflection Sheet.
  • Individually, teachers reflect on 2–3 strategies they will implement, set measurable goals, and note supports needed.
  • In pairs, share action plans and commit to a follow-up check-in date to discuss progress and challenges.

Understanding Social Barriers

• Shyness: reluctance to join groups, minimal participation
• Anxiety: fear of judgment, avoidance of social tasks
• Aggression: interrupting peers, hostile interactions

Define each barrier with examples. Solicit quick stories from teachers about students they’ve observed.

Common Triggers & Behaviors

Discuss triggers that fuel each behavior. Ask pairs to brainstorm and share one example each.

Peer Interaction Scenario Cards

Use these scenario cards in your small groups. Assign roles (Student A, Student B, Facilitator) and role-play guiding a positive peer interaction. After each role-play, debrief: what strategies did you use, what worked, and what you would adjust.


Scenario 1: Inviting a Shy Peer

Context: During partner work, Student A (shy) stands apart and doesn’t enter the group. Student B is working with another partner.

Goal for Facilitator: Prompt Student B to invite Student A in, model language for inclusion, and scaffold a simple first contribution.

Roles:

  • Student A: reluctant, avoids eye contact, minimal speech
  • Student B: focused on own work, unaware of exclusion
  • Facilitator: coach Student B to include and support Student A

Scenario 2: Calming an Anxious Student

Context: In a science experiment, Student A (anxious) fears making mistakes and refuses to handle materials. Student B tries to reassure them.

Goal for Facilitator: Use positive reinforcement and a step-by-step approach to reduce anxiety, encourage risk-taking.

Roles:

  • Student A: worried, expresses fear of doing it wrong

Scenario 3: Redirecting Aggressive Behavior

Scenario 5: Including a Quiet Student in Discussion
