Step 1

Warm-Up: What Makes You Tired?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students: "What kinds of things make you feel tired?" (e.g., playing hard, reading a lot, thinking in school).
    - Facilitate a brief class discussion, writing student responses on the board. Acknowledge that feeling tired is normal after effort.
    - Transition by saying: "Today, we're going to learn about something super important that helps us feel less tired and more energized: sleep!"

    - Go through the slides, explaining how sleep helps their bodies grow, their brains learn, and their feelings stay happy.
    - Use the prompts on the slides to encourage student participation and questions.
    - For example, ask: "How do you think sleep helps your brain remember things?" or "What does 'recharge' mean for your body?"

Step 3

Good Sleep Habits Activity: "My Sleep Superpowers Tracker"

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Sleep Tracker Worksheet to each student.
    - Explain that this worksheet will help them think about their own sleep habits.
    - Guide students through the worksheet, discussing each healthy sleep habit (e.g., consistent bedtime, quiet room, no screens before bed).
    - Have students draw or write one healthy sleep habit they want to try or improve.
    - Encourage sharing their ideas with a partner if time permits.

Step 4

Cool Down: Sleep Video Reflection

5 minutes

  • Display the new video slide in the Sleep Superpowers Slide Deck and watch the short video about sleep.
    - After the video, ask students: "What new idea did you learn about sleep from the video?" or "What was your favorite part of the video and why?"
    - Facilitate a brief discussion to wrap up the lesson.

Sleep Superpowers!

What happens when we sleep? Why is it so important?

Welcome students! Today we're going to talk about something super important that helps us feel our best: sleep! We're going to discover its hidden superpowers. Ask: 'What kinds of things make you feel tired?' (e.g., playing hard, reading a lot, thinking in school).

Your Body Recharges!

āš”ļø Your body rests and gets stronger.
šŸ’Ŗ You grow taller and stronger.
🩹 Your body fixes itself from all the playing and running you do!

Explain that sleep is like charging a battery for their bodies. Ask: 'What happens when your phone or tablet runs out of battery? What happens when you're super tired and haven't slept enough?' Emphasize growth.

Your Brain Gets Smarter!

🧠 Your brain sorts out everything you learned today.
šŸ“– It helps you remember new things for school.
šŸ’” It helps you think clearly and solve problems tomorrow.

Explain that while they sleep, their brain is still working hard, organizing everything they learned. Ask: 'How do you think sleep helps your brain remember things for a test or a game?' Connect it to school and learning.

Your Feelings Stay Happy!

😊 Good sleep helps you feel happy and less grumpy.
šŸ¤ It helps you be a good friend and kind to others.
😌 It helps you stay calm when things are tough.

Discuss how good sleep can help them manage their feelings. Ask: 'Have you ever felt grumpy or extra silly when you didn't get enough sleep?' Explain that sleep helps them be calm and friendly.

Let's watch a quick video to learn more about our amazing sleep superpowers!

Play a short, age-appropriate (2-3 minute) YouTube video about the importance of sleep for kids. A good search term might be 'kids sleep importance video' or 'why do we need sleep for kids'. Ensure the video is reviewed before class. After the video, prepare to discuss key takeaways with the students as part of the cool-down activity.

How Can You Get Your Sleep Superpowers?

✨ Go to bed around the same time every night.
šŸŒ™ Make your room dark, quiet, and cool.
šŸ“µ Put away screens (tablets, phones, TV) an hour before bed.
šŸ“š Read a book or listen to calm music instead.

Introduce the idea of healthy sleep habits. Explain that getting ready for bed in a calm way helps their body know it's time to sleep. Ask: 'What are some things you do before bed to relax?'

Sleep is Your Superpower!

When you get enough sleep, you are:
šŸ’Ŗ Stronger
🧠 Smarter
😊 Happier!

Conclude by reiterating the benefits of sleep and transitioning to the activity. 'Remember, sleep is like your own personal superpower! Now let's think about how we can use it!'
