Slide Deck

Sleep Like a Pro: Session 1

• Welcome and objectives
• Understand what sleep hygiene means
• Define key terms: routine & restorative sleep
• Explore how good sleep helps us feel our best

Welcome students and introduce today’s topic. Explain that sleep is as important as the other healthy habits they’ve learned (nutrition, exercise). Share your own sleep routine briefly to model openness.

Warm-Up: Reflect on Your Sleep

On your worksheet:

  • What time did you go to sleep last night?
  • How did you feel when you woke up today?

Take 2 minutes to write, then we’ll share.

Distribute the warm-up worksheet now. Guide students through the two quick prompts. Encourage honest answers and remind them there are no right or wrong responses.

Key Term: Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene = healthy habits that help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
Examples:

  • Going to bed at the same time every night
  • Limiting screen time before bed

Project this slide and define “sleep hygiene.” Use everyday language: hygiene=healthy habits. Ask for examples of other hygiene habits to connect.

Key Term: Routine

Routine = a sequence of habits you do at the same time each day.
Evening routine examples:

  • Brush teeth, put on pajamas, read for 10 minutes
  • Lay out clothes for tomorrow

Explain that a routine is a series of actions done regularly. Ask: “What’s something you do every morning before school?” Relate to evening routines.

Key Term: Restorative Sleep

Restorative sleep = deep, uninterrupted sleep that energizes you.
Signs you got restorative sleep:

  • You woke up feeling refreshed
  • You stayed asleep most of the night

Discuss restorative sleep as the name suggests: sleep that restores energy and focus. Contrast with restless sleep (waking up tired).

Benefits of Good Sleep

  • Better focus in class
  • Improved mood and fewer grumpy days
  • Lower anxiety about school and friends
  • More energy for sports and activities

List benefits as students call them out. Prompt them to think school, emotions, friendships. Add any missing responses to the slide.

Discussion: How Can Routines Reduce Anxiety?

Think about starting school after summer:

  • How might a bedtime routine help you feel less anxious?
  • What’s one habit you could add tonight?

Share your ideas.

Use this slide to spark a class dialogue. Write student responses on the board. Encourage personal connections.

Next Steps

• Sessions 2 & 3: Explore personal sleep habits & create a sleep plan
• Write down one question or sleep challenge on your worksheet
• We’ll use your ideas to shape upcoming lessons

Explain that in the next two sessions, students will track their own routines and build a personalized sleep plan. Collect the questions/challenges written on their worksheets.

Sleep Like a Pro: Session 2

• Recap key terms from Session 1
• Analyze your sleep log
• Collaborate in small groups
• Set a sleep improvement goal

Welcome back! Outline Session 2’s flow: recap, sleep log reflection, group analysis, and goal setting. Emphasize active participation.

Recap: Key Sleep Terms

Sleep hygiene = healthy habits that help you sleep well.

Routine = consistent daily actions at the same time each day.

Restorative sleep = deep, uninterrupted sleep that energizes you.

Quickly review the three key terms. Ask students to give examples from their own routines to reinforce understanding.

Personal Sleep Log

Use the Personal Sleep Log Worksheet to record for the past two nights:

  • Bedtime
  • Wake-up time
  • Quality of sleep (1–5)

Note any surprises or patterns.

Introduce the Personal Sleep Log Worksheet. Demonstrate one sample entry (e.g., bedtime 9 PM, wake-up 6 AM, quality 4/5).

Small-Group Analysis

In groups of 3–4, compare your logs and list patterns under these headings:

  • Sleep Duration
  • Bedtime Routine
  • Screen Use Before Bed
  • Restfulness

Discuss which habits help or hinder good sleep.

Explain small-group work: each group will receive chart paper with headings to capture common patterns.

Group Share & Discussion

• Share one common pattern your group found.
• How might this pattern affect focus or mood?
• Which patterns could we work to change?

Invite each group to share one pattern they observed and discuss its effect on mood or focus.

Set Your Improvement Goal

Write down one specific sleep habit to improve this week (e.g., “I will turn off screens 30 minutes before bed”).

Save this goal to track progress in Session 3.

Help students frame a clear, achievable goal. Encourage specificity and simplicity.
