Role-Playing Communication Activity

Overview

In this interactive activity, 6th grade students will pair up to practice and strengthen their communication skills. Focusing on active listening, clear expression, and understanding non-verbal cues, students will engage in role-playing scenarios that mirror everyday situations. This activity reinforces the concepts introduced in the "Session 1: Communication Skills" lesson plan.

Objectives

  • Practice active listening by fully concentrating on their partner's words and non-verbal signals.

  • Develop strategies for clear and concise expression of thoughts and feelings.

  • Recognize and interpret non-verbal cues to better understand communication beyond words.

Materials Needed

  • Printed Role-Playing Scenarios (provided by the teacher)

  • Whiteboard and markers for group debriefing

  • Observation sheets for feedback (optional)

Activity Instructions

  1. Pair Up: Divide the class into pairs. Each pair will receive a set of role-playing scenarios that depict common communication situations (e.g., asking for help, giving instructions, or resolving a disagreement).

  2. Scenario Assignment: Provide each pair with a scenario. Ensure that each scenario encourages the use of active listening, clear verbal expression, and paying attention to body language and facial cues.

  3. Role-Play: One student takes on the role of the speaker while the other practices being an active listener. Encourage students to switch roles after one round so that everyone gets a chance to practice both skills.

  4. Debrief:
    • After completing the role-playing exercise, ask each pair to reflect on their experience. What skills did they use effectively?
    • Facilitate a whole-class discussion on the importance of non-verbal cues and ask each pair to share one observation from their role-play.

  5. Feedback and Reflection:
    • Optionally, provide each student with a short observation sheet for peer feedback. Alternatively, conduct a group reflection where students share one thing they learned about their own communication style.

Follow-Up Questions

  • What was one challenge you encountered while trying to listen actively?

  • How did you modify your body language or tone during the exercise?

  • In what ways can clear communication help solve problems in real-life situations?

Teacher Tips

  • Circulate during the role-play to offer gentle reminders to focus on both verbal and non-verbal cues.
