Lesson Plan

Short Vowel Check-up

Students will be able to orally read and identify 10 one-syllable words containing short vowels with 80% accuracy.

Understanding short vowel sounds is a foundational skill for reading. This lesson helps students practice and demonstrates their mastery of these crucial sounds, building confidence and preparing them for more complex words.

Audience

Kindergarten Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Engaging review, interactive practice, and a quick, low-stakes assessment.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-up: Vowel Sound Review

5 minutes

  • Display the first slide of the Short Vowel Slide Deck.
    - Lead students in a quick review of each short vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u) and their corresponding letter. Use gestures or songs if helpful.
    - Ask students to generate one word for each short vowel sound orally as a class.

Step 2

Introducing the Word Check-up

5 minutes

  • Explain to students that they are going to do a 'Short Vowel Check-up' to see how well they know their short vowel words.
    - Emphasize that it's a way for you to help them learn even better, not a test.
    - Distribute the Student Progress Tracker to each student and have them write their name.

Step 3

Guided Word Practice

10 minutes

  • Display the words from the Short Vowel Slide Deck one by one.
    - For each word, say it aloud first, then have students repeat it as a class.
    - Point to the short vowel in each word and emphasize its sound.
    - Ask students to identify the short vowel sound they hear in each word.
    - Encourage students to blend the sounds together to read the word.

Step 4

Individual Progress Monitoring

10 minutes

  • Explain that you will call students up individually to read the words.
    - Use the Short Vowel Word List (Teacher) as your guide and the Student Progress Tracker to record student responses.
    - Have each student read the 10 words aloud to you.
    - For each correct word, make a checkmark on their tracker. For incorrect words, you can make a small dash or 'x'.
    - Reassure students and provide immediate, positive feedback. If a student struggles, you can gently guide them to the correct sound.
    - Collect the Student Progress Tracker sheets to review later and plan for future small group or individual support.
