Slide Deck

Shop Safety: Gear Up!

Welcome to the Shop!

Welcome students and introduce the topic of shop safety. Emphasize that safety is paramount. Ask students to quickly brainstorm why safety is important before showing the title.

Why is Shop Safety Important?

  • Prevent injuries
  • Protect equipment
  • Create a productive learning environment
  • Develop responsible habits

Explain why safety is not just about rules, but about protecting themselves and others. Connect it to real-life consequences.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Safety Glasses/Goggles: Always!
  • Hearing Protection: When it's loud
  • Gloves: For protection, but be careful with moving machinery
  • Appropriate Clothing: No loose items, closed-toe shoes

Introduce different types of PPE and their specific uses. Ask students for examples they've seen or used.

Tool Safety: Handle with Care

  • Use the right tool for the job
  • Inspect tools before use
  • Keep tools sharp and clean
  • Never force a tool
  • Unplug tools when not in use or changing accessories

Discuss general rules for tool handling. Emphasize reading manuals and knowing the tool before operating.

Workspace Organization

  • Keep floors clear of debris and spills
  • Store tools properly
  • Good lighting is essential
  • Proper ventilation for fumes

Talk about the importance of a clean and organized workspace for safety. Clutter leads to accidents.

Fire Safety Basics

  • Know the location of fire extinguishers
  • Understand different types of fires (A, B, C)
  • How to use an extinguisher (P.A.S.S.)

Briefly mention fire safety, location of extinguishers, and how to use them (P.A.S.S.).

What To Do in an Emergency?

  • Stay calm
  • Alert the teacher immediately
  • Do NOT try to handle serious injuries yourself
  • Know the location of the first-aid kit

Discuss emergency procedures. What should students do if an accident occurs, even a small one?

Your Role in Shop Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Report unsafe conditions
  • Ask questions if you're unsure
  • Safety is everyone's responsibility!

Reiterate that safety is a shared responsibility. Encourage questions.

Shop Safety Script

Warm-Up & Introduction (5-10 minutes)

(Teacher): "Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're diving into a really important topic: Shop Safety: Gear Up! (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 1) Before we jump in, let's look at the warm-up you just completed. What were some of the key safety rules or practices you and your partner discussed?"
(Allow 2-3 pairs to share their ideas, validating and affirming their contributions.)

(Teacher): "Excellent points! You've already hit on some crucial elements. Now, why do you think knowing about safety is even more important than just knowing how to use the tools themselves?"
(Listen for responses related to preventing injuries, protecting equipment, ensuring a safe learning environment, etc. Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 2)

(Teacher): "Exactly! Shop safety isn't just a list of rules; it's about protecting yourselves, your classmates, and the equipment. It's about developing responsible habits that will serve you well, not just here, but in any future hands-on environment. Our goal today is to make sure you're geared up with the knowledge to stay safe."

Key Safety Areas: PPE, Tools, and Workspace (10 minutes)

(Teacher): "Let's start with arguably the most personal aspect of safety: Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE. (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 3) What kinds of PPE do you think are absolutely essential in a shop, and why?"
(Guide discussion to include safety glasses, hearing protection, appropriate clothing, closed-toe shoes. Emphasize the 'always' for eye protection and 'when needed' for hearing/gloves, noting glove precautions around moving machinery.)

(Teacher): "Next up, Tool Safety: Handle with Care. (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 4) We have a lot of different tools in the shop. What are some universal rules we should follow no matter what tool we're using?"
(Discuss using the right tool, inspecting tools, keeping them clean/sharp, never forcing, and unplugging when not in use. Ask for examples of what could go wrong if these aren't followed.)

(Teacher): "Beyond our personal gear and how we use tools, the entire environment matters. That brings us to Workspace Organization. (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 5) How does a messy or disorganized workspace increase the risk of accidents? What can we do to keep our shop tidy and safe?"
(Prompt students to think about tripping hazards, misplaced tools, poor visibility, and the importance of good lighting and ventilation.)

Fire Safety & Emergency Procedures (5 minutes)

(Teacher): "Accidents can happen, even when we're careful. Knowing what to do in an emergency is just as important as preventing one. Let's briefly touch on Fire Safety Basics. (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 6) Where are our fire extinguishers located in this shop? Who remembers the acronym for using an extinguisher?"
(Review P.A.S.S. - Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Point out actual locations.)

(Teacher): "And finally, What To Do in an Emergency? (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 7) If you or someone else gets hurt, even a minor cut, what is the very first thing you should do? Why is it important to tell an adult immediately, no matter how small the incident seems?"
(Emphasize staying calm, alerting the teacher, and knowing the first-aid kit location. This transitions into the Shop Safety Discussion Guide.)

Discussion & Conclusion (5-10 minutes)

(Teacher): "Let's take a few minutes for a quick discussion based on some scenarios. Turn to the Shop Safety Discussion Guide or follow along with the prompts on the screen."
(Facilitate the discussion prompts from the guide.)

(Teacher): "Excellent discussion, everyone. Remember, Your Role in Shop Safety (Refer to Shop Safety Slide Deck - Slide 8) is critical. Be aware, report unsafe conditions, ask questions, and understand that safety is a collective responsibility. It's not just about avoiding trouble; it's about being a responsible, capable individual."

Cool-Down (5 minutes)

(Teacher): "To wrap things up, please take out your Shop Safety Cool-Down sheet. On it, I'd like you to write down one key safety takeaway you learned today and how you plan to apply it in the shop. This is your exit ticket for today."

(Collect cool-down sheets as students leave.)

Scenario Discussion

(Teacher): "Let's consider a few scenarios that might happen in the shop. Discuss with a partner or small group, and then we'll share our thoughts as a class."

Scenario 1: The Loose Object

Imagine you are working on a project, and you notice a classmate operating a drill press without their safety glasses on, even though you just discussed PPE. What should you do? Why is it important to address this immediately?

Scenario 2: The Minor Spill

While moving some materials, you accidentally spill a small amount of oil on the concrete floor. It doesn't seem like much, but you're in a hurry. What's the safest course of action? What could happen if you just leave it?

Scenario 3: The Unknown Tool

Your teacher asks you to use a new tool you've never operated before. You're a bit hesitant and unsure how it works. What should you do before attempting to use it?
