Sharing & Taking Turns
Students will identify why sharing and taking turns are important for friendship and will practice these skills during group activities.
Learning to share and take turns is fundamental for building and maintaining positive friendships. It helps ensure fair play, reduces conflict, and makes group activities more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Prep
Preparation Steps
15 minutes
- Review the Sharing & Taking Turns Lesson Plan and all linked materials: Sharing & Taking Turns Slide Deck, Sharing & Taking Turns Discussion Guide, Sharing & Taking Turns Activity Guide, Fair Play Game Cards, and Sharing & Taking Turns Worksheet.
- Ensure access to the video "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Sharing."
- Gather a variety of board games or building toys for small groups.
- Print and cut out Fair Play Game Cards (one set per group).
- Prepare copies of the Sharing & Taking Turns Worksheet for each student.
Step 1
Warm-up: What Makes a Good Friend?

- Greet students and ask: "What are some things good friends do?" (Take 1-2 responses).
- Introduce today's topic: "Today we're going to talk about two very important things good friends do: sharing and taking turns!"

Video Introduction & Viewing
7 minutes
- Use Sharing & Taking Turns Slide Deck Slide 1.
- Introduce the video: "We're going to watch a short video about Howard B. Wigglebottom and how he learns about sharing. Pay attention to what happens when he doesn't share and what happens when he does."
- Play "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Sharing" (5 minutes).
Step 3
Discussion: Reflecting on Sharing
5 minutes
- Use Sharing & Taking Turns Slide Deck Slide 2.
- Facilitate a discussion using the Sharing & Taking Turns Discussion Guide.
- Key questions: "What happened when Howard didn't share? How did it make his friends feel? How did he feel? What changed when he started sharing?"
- Emphasize the teaching point: "Friends share and take turns to keep play fun and make everyone feel happy!"
Step 4
Activity: Game Station Rotation
10 minutes
- Use Sharing & Taking Turns Slide Deck Slide 3.
- Explain the Sharing & Taking Turns Activity Guide: "Now it's your turn to practice! We're going to play some games in small groups. Remember to share the game pieces and take turns fairly. I'll be watching for awesome turn-takers and sharers!"
- Divide students into small groups and provide each with a board game or building toy and Fair Play Game Cards.
- Circulate and observe, offering gentle reminders and positive reinforcement for sharing and turn-taking.
Step 5
Wrap-up & Worksheet
5 minutes
- Use Sharing & Taking Turns Slide Deck Slide 4.
- Bring the groups back together. Ask: "What did you notice about playing when everyone shared and took turns? Was it more fun?"
- Distribute the Sharing & Taking Turns Worksheet. Explain: "This worksheet will help us think more about sharing and taking turns. You can draw or write your answers."
- Collect worksheets or allow students to finish for homework/future discussion.
Step 6
Extension: Fair vs. Unfair Role-Play
As needed
- "For an extra challenge, we can do some role-playing! I'll give you a scenario, and you can show us what fair sharing and unfair sharing look like."
- Provide scenarios like: 'Two friends want to play with the same toy car,' or 'Someone takes all the blocks for their own tower.'
