Time: 5 Minutes

Instructions:

"Good morning/afternoon, Super Social Detectives! Let's get our brains warmed up. When you see someone being a really good friend, what do they do? What do they say? Think about how a good friend acts on the playground or in the classroom. Turn and tell a partner one thing a good friend does!"

  • After a minute, ask for a few volunteers to share their ideas with the whole group. Listen for ideas like 'sharing toys,' 'saying please and thank you,' 'helping a friend,' or 'taking turns.'

Warm Up (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Welcome, Super Social Detectives! You did an amazing job thinking about what good friends do. Today, we're going to learn about some special powers that help us be the best friends ever! We're going to call them 'Super Friend Skills'!

Introduction to Super Friend Skills (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Look at our first Super Friend Skill! It's Sharing! What does it mean to share? Can anyone give an example?"

(Allow a few students to respond.)

Teacher: "That's right! Sharing means letting a friend use your toys, or sharing your crayons. When we share, everyone gets to have fun! It makes our friends feel happy and cared for."

Teacher: "Our next Super Friend Skill is Taking Turns. Who can tell me why taking turns is important? What happens if we don't take turns?"

(Allow a few students to respond.)

Teacher: "Exactly! Taking turns means waiting patiently for your opportunity, like on the slide or with a game. When we take turns, everyone gets a fair chance, and it helps prevent arguments."

Teacher: "And our third Super Friend Skill is using Kind Words! Can you think of some kind words you can say to your friends or teachers?"

(Allow a few students to respond - prompt for 'please,' 'thank you,' 'excuse me,' 'I'm sorry,' 'you're a great friend,' 'good job!')

Teacher: "Wonderful words! Using kind words makes people feel good. It shows respect and helps us be polite. It's like spreading sunshine with our voices!"

Game: Social Skill Sort (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Now that we know our Super Friend Skills, we're going to play a game called Social Skill Sort! I have some cards with different things kids might do or say. Your job, as Super Social Detectives, is to decide if each action is a 'Super Friend' action or a 'Not-So-Super Friend' action."

"We'll read each card together, and then as a group, we'll decide where it belongs. Be ready to tell us why you think it's a Super Friend action or not!"

(Facilitate the game, encouraging discussion for each card.)

Worksheet: My Super Friend Checklist (5 minutes)

Teacher: "You all did such a great job with our game! Now it's time to make our very own My Super Friend Checklist. This is where you get to think about how you will use these Super Friend Skills today and every day. We'll draw or write one way you can be a Super Friend!"

(Distribute worksheets and provide guidance as students work.)

Cool Down: High-Five for Good Choices (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Fantastic work today, Super Friends! Before we finish, I want everyone to think of one Super Friend Skill you are going to try extra hard to use today. Maybe it's sharing, or taking turns, or using kind words. When I come by, give me a high-five and whisper which Super Friend Skill you'll practice!"

(Walk around, giving high-fives and listening to responses. End with positive reinforcement.)
