Shapes On The Loose!

Students will be able to identify and name basic 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in their classroom environment.

Understanding shapes helps students develop spatial reasoning, problem-solving skills, and a foundation for future math concepts. It also helps them describe the world around them!

Whiteboard or Projector, Shapes On The Loose! Slide Deck, Shape Cut-Outs (circle, square, triangle, rectangle), Shape Hunt Checklist, and Crayons or Pencils

Step 1

Introduction: What Are Shapes?

5 minutes

  • Greet students and introduce the lesson topic using the Shapes On The Loose! Slide Deck (Slide 1).
    - Ask students: "What is a shape?" and facilitate a brief discussion.
    - Show the shape cut-outs (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) and introduce each shape by name (Slide 2-5). Ask students to repeat the names.

Interactive Shape Identification

10 minutes

  • Use the Shapes On The Loose! Slide Deck (Slide 6) to show pictures of everyday objects.
    - For each object, ask students: "What shape do you see?" Encourage them to point out the shapes.
    - Facilitate a class discussion, confirming the shapes they identify.

Step 3

Classroom Shape Hunt Activity

10 minutes

  • Explain to students that they will go on a "Shape Hunt" around the classroom (Slide 7).
    - Distribute the Shape Hunt Checklist and pencils/crayons.
    - Instruct students to find one object for each shape (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in the classroom and draw or write its name on their checklist.
    - Circulate and provide support as needed.

Hold up the rectangle cut-out. Ask students to repeat 'rectangle'. Ask them to think of things that are rectangles.

Show everyday objects and ask students to identify the shapes they see. Encourage interaction and discussion.

Explain the Shape Hunt activity. Remind them to look for objects in the classroom that match the shapes on their checklist.
