Shape Builders Blueprint

Students will be able to identify basic geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) and create simple artworks using these shapes.

Understanding shapes is a fundamental building block for math, art, and even reading! This lesson helps students develop spatial reasoning and express creativity while seeing shapes all around them.

Audience

Kindergarten Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Hands-on shape identification and creative art construction.

Materials

Construction Paper (various colors), Safety Scissors, Glue Sticks, Shape Safari Slides, Geometric Collage Challenge, and My Shape Creations

Prep

Gather Materials & Review

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction: What's a Shape?

5 minutes

  • Begin with the Shape Safari Slides presentation, starting with the 'Welcome, Shape Shifters!' slide.
    - Engage students with questions like, 'What shapes do you see around our classroom?'
    - Introduce the four basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle, showing examples on the slides.

Step 2

Shape Safari & Identification

5 minutes

  • Continue with the Shape Safari Slides, guiding students through identifying shapes in everyday objects.
    - Ask students to point out and name the shapes they see on each slide.
    - Encourage vocal participation and provide positive reinforcement.

Step 3

Geometric Collage Challenge

15 minutes

  • Distribute construction paper, safety scissors, and glue sticks.
    - Introduce the Geometric Collage Challenge. Explain that students will cut out various shapes from the construction paper and arrange them to create a new picture or object.
    - Circulate around the room, offering assistance and encouraging creative expression. Prompt students with questions like, 'What could you make with a square and two triangles?'

Step 4

My Shape Creations & Reflection

5 minutes

  • Hand out the My Shape Creations journals.
    - Have students draw one of their favorite creations from the collage activity and write (or dictate) a sentence about it.
    - Conclude by asking students to share their favorite shape and why during a quick show-and-tell.

Let's discover the hidden shapes all around us!

Welcome students and set an exciting tone for exploring shapes.

Meet the Circle!

  • Round and round like a wheel!
    - No corners, no straight sides.
    - Think of a yummy pizza or a bouncy ball!

Introduce the circle and provide real-world examples. Ask students to identify circles in the classroom.

Hello, Square!

  • Four equal sides, four perfect corners!
    - Like a window or a cracker.
    - Can you find a square in our room?

Introduce the square and provide real-world examples. Ask students to identify squares in the classroom.

Terrific Triangle!

  • Three sides, three points!
    - Looks like a slice of pie or a mountain peak.
    - What can you make with triangles?

Introduce the triangle and provide real-world examples. Ask students to identify triangles.

Awesome Rectangle!

  • Four sides, just like a square, but two are longer!
    - Like a door or a book.
    - Can you see any rectangles?

Introduce the rectangle and provide real-world examples. Ask students to identify rectangles.

Shape Hunt!

Look closely at this picture.
What shapes can you find?

Encourage students to look for shapes in the provided image.

Time to Create!

Now that we know our shapes, it's time to become Artists!
You'll use circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles to make your own masterpiece!

Prepare students for the hands-on activity. Reinforce that they will be creating art with shapes.

Activity

Geometric Collage Challenge

Goal: Use basic shapes to create a fantastic picture!
