Sentence Supercharge Plan

In this 30-minute individual session, the student will learn to identify subjects and predicates, enrich sentences with descriptive details, and vary sentence structure through guided practice to build clearer, more engaging writing.

Mastering sentence parts, descriptive language, and varied structures lays the foundation for coherent, creative writing. This focused practice boosts confidence and prepares students for more advanced composition tasks.

  • Sentence-Building Practice Worksheet, - Descriptive Details Word Bank, - Sentence Structure Example Cards, and - Notebook and Pencil

Prep

Review and Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Familiarize yourself with the Sentence-Building Practice Worksheet.
  • Review the Descriptive Details Word Bank for relevant adjectives and adverbs.
  • Print and cut out the Sentence Structure Example Cards.
  • Ensure the student has a notebook and pencil ready.

Step 1

Introduction to Sentence Parts

5 minutes

  • Present a simple sentence, e.g., "The dog chased the ball."
  • Instruct the student to underline the subject and circle the predicate.
  • Discuss how subjects and predicates form the core of a sentence.

Step 2

Adding Descriptive Details

10 minutes

  • Provide a basic sentence, e.g., "The cat sat on the mat."
  • Refer to the Descriptive Details Word Bank to select adjectives and adverbs.
  • Guide the student to rewrite the sentence with added details (e.g., "The fluffy cat quietly sat on the colorful mat.").

Step 3

Varying Sentence Structure

10 minutes

  • Introduce the Sentence Structure Example Cards.
  • Review examples of simple, compound, and complex sentences.
  • Have the student transform a simple sentence into one compound and one complex sentence.
