Lesson Plan

Self-Monitoring Mastery

Teach self-monitoring skills

This lesson introduces 9th graders to self-monitoring, an essential executive functioning skill. Through a collaborative game and reflection, students will learn to assess and adjust their behavior and performance. This skill is crucial for academic success and personal growth, helping students become more self-aware and independent learners.

Audience

9th Grade Executive Functioning

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Game-Based Learning, Collaborative Learning, Active Learning

Materials

Post-it notes, Pens, Self-Monitoring Game Instructions, and Reflection Worksheet

Step 1

Introduction to Self-Monitoring

5 mins

  • Briefly explain what self-monitoring is: the ability to observe and regulate one's own behavior and performance.
  • Discuss why self-monitoring is important for personal and academic success.
  • Ask students to share examples of when they have used self-monitoring in their lives.

Step 2

Self-Monitoring Game

15 mins

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Provide each group with the Self-Monitoring Game Instructions.
  • Explain the rules: Each group will perform a task (e.g., building a small structure with blocks) while monitoring their own performance and behavior.
  • Encourage students to use post-it notes to jot down observations about their performance and any adjustments they make.
  • Facilitate the game, ensuring students are engaged and understanding the concept of self-monitoring.

Step 3

Reflection and Discussion

10 mins

  • Distribute the Reflection Worksheet to each student.
  • Ask students to reflect on their experience during the game: What did they notice about their behavior? How did they adjust?
  • Conduct a class discussion using the Reflection Worksheet as a guide.
  • Encourage students to share insights and how they can apply self-monitoring in other areas of their lives.
