Self-Management Superpowers: Level Up!

Students will identify emotional triggers and practice regulation strategies, create realistic plans for time management and goal achievement, and develop resilience and a growth mindset to overcome challenges.

This lesson helps students build essential life skills in emotional regulation, organization, and perseverance. These are critical for academic success, personal well-being, and navigating daily challenges in high school and beyond.

Prep

Review Materials and Set Up

15-20 minutes

  • Review the entire lesson plan and all generated materials, including the Self-Management Slides, Trigger–Thought–Response Worksheet, SMART Goal Worksheet, Resilience Plan Worksheet, and the Student Handout Packet.
  • Prepare chart paper or a whiteboard for each session.
  • Gather any physical calm-down strategy cards or visuals you wish to use.
  • Ensure students have access to blank weekly planner templates.
  • Prepare timers or instruct students to use their phones for the 'Time Audit' activity.
  • Prepare growth mindset quote cards for Session 3.
  • Consider printing copies of all worksheets and handouts, or ensure they are accessible digitally for students.

Step 1

Session 1: Self-Awareness & Emotional Regulation

30-40 minutes

Welcome & Check-In (5 min)

  • Prompt: “Name one emotion you’ve felt strongly this week.”
  • Encourage brief sharing and normalize different feelings.

Mini-Lesson (10 min)

  • Use the Self-Management Slides to discuss how thoughts → feelings → actions are connected.
  • Identify common stressors (school, peers, home).

Activity (15 min)

Reflection & Goal (10 min)

  • Ask: “Which tool will you try this week?”
  • Students write down 2 regulation tools to practice on their Student Handout Packet.

Session 2: Focus, Organization & Time Management

30-40 minutes

  • Prompt: “What went well when you used your regulation tool this week?”
  • Facilitate a brief discussion on their experiences.

Mini-Lesson (10 min)

  • Use the Self-Management Slides to discuss how organization reduces stress.
  • Explain the SMART goal framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

Activity (15 min)

  • Distribute the 'My Time Audit' section of the Student Handout Packet and blank weekly planner templates.
  • Guide students through a “Time Audit”: Where do their hours go in a typical day?
  • Have them identify one area to adjust for better balance.
  • Students create a SMART goal using the 'My SMART Goal' section of the Student Handout Packet and enter it on a weekly planner.

Reflection & Goal (10 min)

  • Ask: “What’s one small change you’ll make this week to reach your goal?”
  • Students record their goal in the Student Handout Packet.

Session 3: Motivation, Perseverance & Growth Mindset

  • Guide students through an “Obstacle → Opportunity” reflection: Think of a challenge and how they grew from it.
  • Students create a Resilience Plan: 3 steps for bouncing back when things get tough.
  • Students write a personal motivation statement or affirmation.

This discussion is designed to encourage students to reflect on their self-management journey throughout the three sessions and to connect these concepts to their broader lives.

Session 1: Emotional Regulation in Action

  1. Sharing Successes: Who felt brave enough to try one of their emotional regulation tools this week? What happened? What did you learn about yourself?


  2. Challenging Moments: Can anyone share a situation where they didn't use a tool, and what the outcome was? What might you do differently next time?

Self-Management Role-Play Activity: Navigating Challenges

This activity provides an opportunity for students to practice applying the self-management skills learned in a safe, simulated environment. Working in small groups, students will address common high school challenges using their newly acquired tools.

Instructions:

  1. Form Small Groups: Divide into groups of 3-4 students.
  2. Scenario Cards: Each group will receive a few scenario cards (see below). Choose one scenario to focus on first.
  3. Discuss & Strategize (5-7 minutes): As a group, discuss the chosen scenario.
    • What self-management skills apply here? (e.g., emotional regulation, SMART goals, growth mindset)
    • What specific tools could the person in the scenario use?
    • How might a fixed mindset approach this? How would a growth mindset approach it?
    • Brainstorm a plan of action using the tools and mindsets discussed.
  4. Role-Play (3-5 minutes per scenario): Role-play the scenario, demonstrating how the individual would use the self-management skills to navigate the challenge. One student can play the person facing the challenge, and others can play supporting roles (e.g., a friend offering advice, or simply observing and providing feedback).
  5. Reflect & Share (3-5 minutes): After each role-play, discuss within your group:
    • What went well in the role-play?
    • What was challenging about applying the tools?
    • What did you learn from observing or participating?
    • Be prepared to share your scenario, strategy, and reflections with the whole class.

Scenario 2: Group Project Gone Wrong

You're working on a group project, and one of your teammates isn't pulling their weight. The deadline is approaching fast, and you're worried about your grade. You feel frustrated and angry, and you're tempted to just do all the work yourself.










Scenario 3: Receiving Critical Feedback

You got back a graded assignment, and the teacher left a lot of critical comments. You feel discouraged and think, "I'm just not smart enough for this subject." You want to give up and avoid trying hard in that class anymore.
