In this workshop, students will explore various self-care techniques that can be integrated into their daily lives, guided by key Ignatian reflection principles. Through a combination of video content, personal reflection, and group activities, students will learn the importance of prioritizing self-care for their overall well-being. This lesson will help students develop skills to enhance their self-love, self-awareness, and self-control.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Greet the students and briefly introduce the topic of self-care.
  • Explain the importance of self-care in maintaining mental, emotional, and physical health.
  • Briefly introduce Ignatian reflection and how it can enhance self-care by helping us become more aware of God's presence and our daily choices.
  • Show the video Self Care Techniques

Step 2

Personal Self-Care Plan Activity

20 mins

  • Distribute the 'Personal Self-Care Plan' worksheet to each student.
  • Introduce the concept of reflection by asking students to think about their daily routines and identify moments of consolation and desolation—times they felt closer to God or further away.
  • Instruct students to identify at least three self-care activities they can incorporate into their daily lives, reflecting on these moments.
  • Encourage students to be specific and realistic with their plans, considering activities they enjoy and that fit into their schedules.
  • Circulate around the room to provide support and answer any questions.

Step 3

Group Sharing and Discussion

20 mins

  • Ask students to pair up and share their self-care plans with a partner.
  • Encourage them to discuss why they chose those particular activities and how they relate to their moments of consolation and desolation.
  • Bring the class back together and invite a few pairs to share their discussions with the larger group.
  • Facilitate a group discussion on the common themes and unique ideas from the pairs, fostering a supportive environment.

Step 4

Self-Control Reflection

10 mins

  • Discuss the importance of self-control in the context of self-care.
  • Explain how Ignatian reflection helps us discern our choices and maintain self-control.
  • Ask students to reflect on situations where they might need self-control to implement their self-care plans, using Ignatian principles.
  • Provide examples and strategies, such as avoiding distractions, setting goals, and using reminders.

Step 5

Closure and Reflection

10 mins

  • Ask students to reflect on the activity and write down how they feel about their self-care plans and strategies for self-control on a Post-it note.
  • Encourage students to include a moment of gratitude, recognizing God's presence in their reflections.
  • Collect the Post-it notes and read some of the reflections aloud (anonymously, if preferred).
  • Conclude the lesson by emphasizing the importance of consistently practicing self-care and self-control, and revisiting their plans as needed.
  • Encourage students to keep their worksheets somewhere visible as a reminder to prioritize self-care and daily reflection.
