Self-Care Superpowers: Fueling My Well-Being!
What makes you feel happy, energized, or calm? 🤔
Today, we're going to discover our own 'superpowers' for taking care of ourselves!
Welcome students and introduce the exciting topic of self-care. Ask students to think about things that make them feel good.
What is Self-Care?
Self-care is taking time to do things that make you feel good!
It's about caring for your:
- Body 🏃♀️🍎
- Mind 🧠📚
- Emotions 😊😌
Define self-care in simple terms. Emphasize that it's about taking care of our whole selves – body, mind, and feelings. Ask for a few examples from students.
Why Do We Need Self-Care Superpowers?
Self-care helps you to:
- Feel happier and less stressed
- Have more energy for learning and playing
- Be a kinder friend and a better learner
- Grow into your best self!
Explain why self-care is important, especially for students who might feel stressed or tired sometimes. Connect it to doing better in school and feeling happier.
Different Kinds of Self-Care
Self-care isn't just one thing! It can be:
- Physical: How you take care of your body
- Mental: How you take care of your mind
- Emotional: How you take care of your feelings
What do you think these mean?
Introduce the idea of different categories of self-care. This slide will lead into the brainstorming activity.
Let's Brainstorm Our Superpowers!
It's time to put on our thinking caps! 🧠
Let's brainstorm different self-care activities for each category. No idea is too silly!
Transition to the brainstorming activity. Explain that students will be working to come up with ideas for each category.
Script
Self-Care Superpowers: Teacher Script
Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Or good afternoon! Today, we're going to talk about something super important, something that helps us all feel our best. Look at our title slide: 'Self-Care Superpowers: Fueling My Well-Being!' Does that sound interesting? What do you think a 'self-care superpower' might be?"
(Allow a few student responses. Guide them towards ideas of personal strength and well-being.)
Teacher: "That's a great start! Let's begin with a quick warm-up. I want you to think about this: What's one thing you do that makes you feel happy, energized, or calm? It could be anything! Maybe it's listening to music, playing outside, drawing, or even just sitting quietly for a few minutes. Think about it for a moment, and then I'd love for a few of you to share."
(Listen to 2-3 student responses, affirming each one. Connect their ideas to self-care.)
Teacher: "Wonderful examples! Those are all fantastic ways you take care of yourselves, even if you didn't call it 'self-care.' And that's exactly what we're going to explore today."
(Advance to Slide 2: 'What is Self-Care?')
Teacher: "So, what exactly is self-care? As you can see here, self-care is all about taking time to do things that make you feel good! It's not selfish; it's necessary! Think of it like recharging your own personal battery. We have different parts of ourselves that need care: our bodies, our minds, and our emotions. Can anyone give me an example of how you might take care of your body? What about your mind? Or your emotions?"
(Facilitate a brief discussion, providing examples if needed: e.g., 'Eating healthy food is physical self-care,' 'Reading a book is mental self-care,' 'Talking to a friend when you're sad is emotional self-care.')
(Advance to Slide 3: 'Why Do We Need Self-Care Superpowers?')
Teacher: "Now, why is this so important? Why do we need these self-care superpowers? Look at the slide. Self-care helps us feel happier, less stressed, and gives us more energy for everything we do – for learning in school, for playing with friends, and for being kind to ourselves and others. When you take care of yourself, you're better able to handle challenges and be your best self! Has anyone ever felt really tired or grumpy because they didn't get enough sleep? Or too stressed to focus on their homework? That's when self-care comes in!"
(Allow for a few brief shares if students volunteer.)
(Advance to Slide 4: 'Different Kinds of Self-Care')
Teacher: "Self-care isn't just one thing, as we've already started to see. It comes in different kinds. We have physical self-care, which is how we take care of our bodies. Mental self-care, how we take care of our minds. And emotional self-care, how we take care of our feelings. Before we brainstorm together, what do you think these mean? What are some quick examples that come to mind for each?"
(Allow students to offer examples, clarifying as needed.)
(Advance to Slide 5: 'Let's Brainstorm Our Superpowers!')
Teacher: "Alright, it's time to put on our thinking caps! I'm going to hand out this Self-Care Brainstorm Activity worksheet. In your groups, or as a whole class, we're going to brainstorm as many self-care activities as we can for each category: physical, mental, and emotional. There are no silly ideas! Think about what genuinely makes you feel good and healthy. I'll give you about 15 minutes for this. Let's try to fill up those sections!"
(Distribute the activity. Circulate and support groups. After 15 minutes, bring the class back together.)
Teacher: "Okay, let's hear some of these amazing self-care superpowers you've come up with! Who has an idea for physical self-care? How about mental self-care? And emotional self-care?"
(Record student ideas on a whiteboard or chart paper under the three categories, creating a master list.)
Teacher: "Wow, what a fantastic list of self-care superpowers! Now, it's time to discover your personal self-care superpowers. I'm going to give you another worksheet called My Self-Care Superpowers Worksheet. On this sheet, I want you to choose your favorite self-care activities from our brainstorm, or even come up with new ones that really resonate with you. You can write them down or draw pictures – whatever helps you express your unique superpowers for taking care of yourself."
(Distribute the worksheet. Give students about 15 minutes to complete it. Encourage them to be creative and thoughtful.)
Teacher: "Alright, everyone, bring it back together. Who would like to share one of their self-care superpowers? Remember, self-care looks different for everyone, and that's perfectly okay. What works for one person might not work for another. It's about finding what fuels you."
(Invite a few students to share their chosen superpowers. Affirm their choices and emphasize the personalization of self-care.)
Teacher: "To help you continue thinking about your self-care journey, I'm also providing a Self-Care Reflection Journal. You can take this home and reflect further, or if we have a few extra minutes, you can start writing now."
(Distribute journals.)
Teacher: "For our cool-down today, I want everyone to silently choose just one of their self-care superpowers from their worksheet – just one! – and make a quiet commitment to themselves to try and practice it sometime this week. It could be for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, whatever you can manage. The most important thing is to start making self-care a regular practice. Remember, taking care of yourself isn't a luxury; it's a necessity to be your happiest, healthiest self! Thank you, everyone!"
