Activity

SEL Superpowers: Daily Boost - Daily SEL Activity

This activity is designed to be a part of the daily session in the SEL Superpowers: Daily Boost series. Each day, students will engage in a dynamic, interactive exercise that reinforces the SEL strategy of the day. The activity aims to ensure variety and engagement while supporting the development of essential social-emotional skills.

Activity Overview

  • Objective: Reinforce the daily SEL skill (e.g., self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, or responsible decision-making) through interactive exercises.
  • Time: 6 minutes (as part of the total 10-minute session)
  • Format: Quick, hands-on exercise that may involve role-playing scenarios, group discussions, or mindfulness activities.

Activity Structure

1. Introduction (1 minute)

  • Quickly relate the day's SEL topic to the activity. For instance, explain how role-playing can help in practicing empathy or solving conflicts.
  • Ask students a thought-provoking question: "How can we use what we've learned today in our everyday lives?"

2. Main Activity (3-4 minutes)

  • Role-Playing: Invite a small group of students to act out a scenario that demonstrates the SEL skill in question. For example, navigating a disagreement or expressing feelings in a respectful way.
  • Mindfulness Exercise: Lead a brief breathing or mindful moment if the day's focus is on self-management or stress relief.

Flexibility: You can adapt the activity based on class size and daily focus. Consider preparing a few variations in advance to keep the sessions fresh and engaging.

3. Quick Debrief (1-2 minutes)

  • Gather reactions from the students. Ask: "What did you notice about how it felt to use this skill?"
  • Encourage a few students to share their insights. This reinforces learning and provides immediate feedback.

Follow-Up Points

  • Reflection: After the session, encourage students to jot down one thing they learned or one way they can apply this SEL strategy later in the day. This can be done on the reflective worksheet supplied in the SEL Superpowers: Daily Boost Plan.

  • Extension: For students who might finish early or show advanced interest, offer a small challenge: ask them to think of another scenario where they might apply the same SEL strategy and share it with the class.

By using engaging, interactive activities each day, students will have many opportunities to practice and internalize the SEL skills that will benefit them both academically and personally.
