Lesson Plan
Secret Code Lesson Blueprint
Students will collaboratively decode secret messages about moral scenarios and discuss responsible choices, then reflect on key decision-making values.
This lesson fosters critical thinking and moral literacy by engaging students in decoding puzzles and structured discussions to practice responsible decision-making.
Audience
5th Grade Class
Time
40 minutes
Approach
Interactive decoding and value-based discussion.
Materials
Prep
Teacher Preparation
15 minutes
- Review Decode & Discuss Slides.
- Print and assemble cipher puzzles for Cipher Puzzle Stations.
- Print copies of Value-Based Debate Prompts.
- Photocopy Key Takeaway Tracker for each student.
- Arrange classroom into four station areas for group rotations.
Step 1
Introduction & Warm-Up
5 minutes
- Display the title slide from Decode & Discuss Slides.
- Explain the concept: secret codes reveal ethical scenarios about choices and values.
- Model decoding a simple cipher together as a class.
Step 2
Decoding Stations Activity
15 minutes
- Divide students into small groups and assign each to a station with a puzzle from Cipher Puzzle Stations.
- Groups decode their secret message, read the scenario, and note possible actions.
- After 5 minutes, rotate groups through remaining stations until all complete.
Step 3
Group Discussion
10 minutes
- Reconvene as a whole class and use Value-Based Debate Prompts.
- Each group presents one decoded scenario and their chosen course of action.
- Facilitate respectful debate: ask why they chose certain values and decision strategies.
Step 4
Cool-Down Reflection
10 minutes
- Distribute Key Takeaway Tracker sheets.
- Students write down one core value they learned and one strategy for making responsible decisions.
- Invite volunteers to share their tracker insights with the class.

Secret Code of Choices
CASEL Competency: Responsible Decision-Making
Grade: 5th | Tier 1 | 40 Minutes
Let’s become codebreakers and explore important choices!
Welcome students! Introduce our lesson on decoding secret messages to explore responsible decision-making. Explain today’s journey: we’ll crack codes, discuss scenarios, and reflect on values.
Warm-Up: What Is a Cipher?
A cipher is a secret way to write a message by shifting or swapping letters.
Example: Caesar Shift by 3
A → D, B → E, C → F…
Encrypted: KHOOR ZRUOG
Define a cipher in simple terms. Use this slide to model how letters can shift in a code. Ask: “How might we decode this?”
Decoding Example
Encrypted message: KHOOR ZRUOG
Step 1: K → H
Step 2: H → E
Step 3: O → L
Step 4: O → L
Step 5: R → O
Decoded: HELLO WORLD
Walk through each step: shift letters back by 3 to reveal “HELLO WORLD.” Have a volunteer help you decode the example.
Decoding Stations
• Divide into 4 groups.
• Each station has a cipher puzzle and a moral scenario.
• Decode the message and list possible actions.
• Rotate every 5 minutes until all stations are complete.
Explain station rotations clearly. Each station has a puzzle, a scenario, and note-taking sheets. Emphasize collaboration and time management.
Value-Based Debate Prompts
- Is it more important to be honest or to protect someone’s feelings?
- When is sharing a secret okay—and when is it not?
- Would you tell a friend the truth even if it might upset them? Why?
Use these prompts to guide the whole-class debate. Encourage students to explain their reasoning and connect to core values.
Reflection: Key Takeaways
• Write one core value you found important today.
• Describe one strategy you’ll use for responsible decisions.
Share your thoughts with a partner or the class.
Distribute the tracker. Guide students to write one core value and one decision strategy. Invite volunteers to share.
Activity
Cipher Puzzle Stations Activity
Divide into four stations. At each station, decode the secret message using the given cipher, then read the moral scenario and discuss possible actions. Record your group’s ideas before rotating.
Station 1: Caesar Cipher
Encrypted Message:
BRX ILQG D ORVW ZDOOHW
Decoding Instructions: Shift each letter back by 3 (e.g., B→Y, R→O, X→U).
Decoded Message: YOU FIND A LOST WALLET
Scenario: You find a lost wallet full of money on the playground.
• What are two possible actions you could take?
• Which action shows honesty and responsibility? Why?
Station 2: Substitution Cipher (Atbash)
Encrypted Message:
BLF HVV XVZGRMT
Decoding Instructions: Use the Atbash cipher (A↔Z, B↔Y, C↔X, etc.).
Decoded Message: YOU SEE CHEATING
Scenario: You see a classmate cheating on a test.
• What are two different responses you might have?
• Which choice aligns with doing the right thing? Explain.
Station 3: Columnar Transposition
Encrypted Message:
ALTTPIONESS
Decoding Instructions: Write the letters into a grid of 3 columns, filling top to bottom, left to right. Then read down each column in order to reconstruct the plain text.
Decoded Message: A PET IS LOST
Scenario: Your neighbor’s pet went missing and you find tracks leading from your yard.
• List two actions you could take.
• Which action is most helpful and responsible? Why?
Station 4: Reverse Text Cipher
Encrypted Message:
HTURT EHT LLET UOY DLUOHS
Decoding Instructions: Read the entire message backwards (right to left).
Decoded Message: SHOULD YOU TELL THE TRUTH
Scenario: The message asks: “Should you tell the truth even if it might hurt someone’s feelings?”
• Describe a situation when telling the truth is important.
• Describe a situation when you might choose to remain silent.
• How do you decide which to do?
After 5 minutes, rotate to the next station until all stations are complete.
Discussion
Value-Based Debate Prompts
Discussion Objectives
- Practice respectful debate skills
- Connect choices to core ethical values
- Strengthen reasoning by giving examples and listening to peers
Discussion Guidelines
- Listen carefully and don’t interrupt.
- Speak clearly and refer to the question.
- Explain your reasoning: use “I think… because…”
- Respond to others: ask clarifying questions or build on ideas.
1. Is it more important to be honest or to protect someone’s feelings?
• State your position and one reason why.
• Give an example from real life or a story.
2. When is sharing a secret okay—and when should you keep it?
• Describe two different situations (one for sharing, one for keeping).
• Explain which choice aligns with responsibility.
3. Would you tell a friend the truth even if it might upset them? Why or why not?
• Describe a specific scenario.
• What core value guides your decision?
Follow-Up Questions (Use as Needed)
- How might someone with a different value see this choice?
- What could be the short-term and long-term effects of your decision?
- If you changed your mind, what new information or feelings led you to that?
- How can we support each other when decisions are tough?
