This activity is designed to spark creativity and discussion among students about offline activities they can enjoy. Through a series of guided brainstorming and group interactions, students will generate ideas and share potential alternatives to excessive screen time.
Instructions for Facilitators
- Begin by splitting students into small groups.
- Provide them with a prompt: "What are some fun, engaging activities you can do without screens? Think of hobbies, games, or outdoor adventures."
- Allow 10 minutes for each group to brainstorm and list as many ideas as they can on a whiteboard or paper.
- Once time is up, invite each group to share their top 3 ideas with the class.
- Ask guiding questions to deepen the discussion:
- Why might this activity be a good alternative to screen time?
- How does engaging in this activity benefit your well-being or creativity?
- Could this activity be done with friends or family? How?
Key Points for Reflection
- Think about the benefits of disconnecting from screens and connecting with real-world experiences.
- Consider variety: How might different activities appeal to different interests?
Follow-Up Discussion
After the brainstorming session, conduct a full-group discussion with the following questions:
- What did you learn about your own screen time habits?
- Were there any activities that surprised you?
- How can you incorporate these offline activities into your daily routine?
- Can you think of any challenges to implementing these activities? How might you overcome them?
Ensure that everyone has a chance to contribute to the discussion, fostering an inclusive environment where all ideas are valued.
This activity is a step toward discovering a balance between digital and offline life, promoting a healthier lifestyle overall.
Game
Offline Hobby Hunt
This interactive game encourages students to actively explore offline hobbies through a scavenger hunt format. In this activity, students will be divided into small groups and tasked with finding or demonstrating various offline activities from a pre-prepared list or brainstormed ideas.
Game Setup & Instructions
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Explain that each group will participate in a scavenger hunt to find evidence or examples of offline activities.
- Provide each group with a list of offline activity prompts (e.g., reading a book, drawing, playing a board game, gardening, doing a puzzle) or allow them to choose any offline hobby they are familiar with.
- Give groups 10-15 minutes to locate items, create quick demonstrations, or take notes on how the activity can be enjoyed without screens.
- After the hunt, each group will prepare a brief presentation (2-3 minutes) on the activity they found and explain its benefits (focusing on creativity, physical activity, and social interaction).
Discussion Points & Reflection
- What offline activities did you explore during the hunt?
- How did collaborating with your group enhance the experience?
- What benefits can you see from engaging in these offline hobbies compared to screen-based activities?
- Did this experience spark any new interests? If so, which one?
Follow-Up
- Encourage students to try incorporating one new offline hobby into their weekly routine.
- Consider displaying photos or written reflections of the activities in the classroom to inspire others.
- Use the insights from this game to further discuss the importance of balancing screen time with offline activities.
This game is not just about the hunt, but about recognizing and appreciating the diversity of offline hobbies available and understanding the hidden benefits they bring to everyday life.
