Prep

  • Review the Safety: Your Everyday Shield Slide Deck to familiarize yourself with the content and flow.
    * Print and cut out the Safety Scenario Cards (one set per small group).
    * Ensure projector/smartboard is functional for the presentation.
    * Review the Safety Reflection Cool Down for wrap-up.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Think-Pair-Share on Safety

5 minutes

  • Begin with the Safety Warm Up activity.
    * Ask students: "What does 'safety' mean to you in your daily life?"
    * Have students individually brainstorm for 1 minute, then pair with a partner to share for 2 minutes. Call on a few pairs to share with the class.

Introduction to Everyday Safety

5 minutes

  • Display Slide 2 and introduce the lesson objectives.
    * Facilitate a brief discussion on why personal safety is increasingly important as students become more independent (driving, social events, online presence).

Step 3

Identifying Risks & Mitigation Strategies

10 minutes

  • Display Slide 3 and introduce different categories of safety risks (e.g., physical, online, emotional).
    * Divide students into small groups (3-4 students).
    * Distribute Safety Scenario Cards to each group.
    * Instruct groups to discuss each scenario, identify the risks, and brainstorm mitigation strategies. Encourage them to be specific and practical.

5 minutes

  • Bring the class back together.
    * Have each group share one scenario and their proposed solutions.
    * Facilitate a brief class discussion, highlighting common themes and effective strategies. Use Slide 4 for visual reinforcement of key takeaways.

Cool Down: Reflection

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Safety Reflection Cool Down.
    * Ask students to complete the cool-down individually, reflecting on one new safety strategy they learned or reinforced.
    * Collect cool-downs as an exit ticket.
