Rounding Spooktacular Lesson Plan

Students will learn to round whole numbers to the nearest ten and hundred through festive, Halloween-themed examples and a hands-on rounding game.

Rounding is a foundational skill for estimation and real-world math. This lesson’s engaging theme boosts student confidence and fluency, making practice memorable.

Audience

5th Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Teach rules, practice with worksheet, then play a rounding game.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction to Rounding

5 minutes

  • Project the Rounding Review Slide Deck.
  • Explain rounding rules: digits 0–4 round down, 5–9 round up.
  • Show Halloween examples (e.g., rounding spooky candy counts) to nearest ten and hundred.

Step 2

Guided Practice

10 minutes

  • Distribute Spooky Rounding Worksheet.
  • Complete the first 2–3 problems together, modeling think-aloud.
  • Students work with a partner on remaining problems; teacher circulates to support.

Step 3

Rounding Spooktacular Game

10 minutes

  • Form groups of 3–4; give each group a Haunted House Rounding Game Board and Monster Rounding Cards.
  • On their turn, a student draws a card, rounds its number to the nearest ten or hundred, and states their answer.
  • Correct answers let players move their token closer to the haunted house; first group to reach it wins.

Step 4

Wrap-Up and Assessment

5 minutes

  • Ask 2–3 volunteers to explain how they decided to round a number.
  • Distribute a quick exit ticket: one number to round to the nearest ten and one to the nearest hundred.
  • Collect exit tickets. Use the Answer Key for Spooky Rounding Worksheet to review any common errors next session.

Slide Deck

Welcome to Rounding Spooktacular!

• Get your broomsticks ready – we’re rounding numbers tonight!
• Today’s goals:
– Round to the nearest ten
– Round to the nearest hundred

Welcome students! Play some light spooky music as you display this slide. Introduce today’s Halloween rounding adventure.

Rounding to the Nearest Ten

Rule: Look at the ones digit:
• If it’s 0–4 → round down
• If it’s 5–9 → round up

Example:
• 43 spooky bats → ones digit 3 → round down → 40 bats

Explain the rule for rounding to the nearest ten. Point to the ones digit in each example and use the pumpkin graphic on the slide.

Practice: Nearest Ten

Round each Halloween count to the nearest ten:

  1. 57 candy corns
  2. 62 ghost stickers
  3. 74 haunted house visits

Call on volunteers to answer each problem. Encourage students to think “down or up?”

Rounding to the Nearest Hundred

Rule: Look at the tens digit:
• If it’s 0–4 → round down
• If it’s 5–9 → round up

Example:
• 147 trick‐or‐treaters → tens digit 4 → round down → 100

Now transition to rounding to the hundred. Highlight the tens digit in your example graphic.

Practice: Nearest Hundred

Round each spooky number to the nearest hundred:

  1. 238 jack‐o’‐lanterns
  2. 375 spider webs
  3. 449 bats

Have students work with a partner to solve, then share answers as a class.

Part 4: Explain Your Thinking

A sample explanation for rounding to the nearest ten:

"To round a number to the nearest ten, look at the ones digit:

  • If it’s 0–4, round down (keep the tens digit the same and change the ones digit to 0).
  • If it’s 5–9, round up (add 1 to the tens digit and change the ones digit to 0).

For example, if I have 47 witch hats, the ones digit is 7, so I round up:
47 → 50."
