Restorative Circles Discussion

This lesson focuses on using restorative circles to foster a sense of community and understanding among high school students in a social emotional program. Restorative circles are a powerful tool for building trust, encouraging open communication, and resolving conflicts in a supportive environment. Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Welcome students and explain the purpose of the restorative circle.
  • Discuss the importance of creating a safe and respectful space for everyone to share.
  • Introduce the concept of a talking piece and how it will be used to facilitate the discussion.

Step 2

Circle Guidelines

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Circle Guidelines Handout.
  • Review the guidelines with the students, emphasizing respect, confidentiality, and active listening.
  • Answer any questions students may have about the process.

Step 3

Restorative Circle Discussion

10 minutes

  • Begin the circle by introducing the first discussion question from the Discussion Questions attachment.
  • Use the talking piece to ensure everyone has a chance to speak.
  • Encourage students to share their thoughts and listen actively to their peers.
  • Guide the discussion using the provided questions and prompts.

Step 4

Reflection Activity

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Reflection Worksheet.
  • Ask students to reflect on the discussion and write down their thoughts and feelings.
  • Encourage them to consider how they can apply what they've learned in their daily interactions.

Step 5

Closure

5 minutes

  • Gather students back into a circle for a brief closing discussion.
  • Invite students to share one takeaway from the session.
  • Thank everyone for their participation and remind them of the importance of maintaining a supportive community.
