Respectful Role Play

Focus on self, respect others

This lesson aims to teach students the importance of respecting others and focusing on self-improvement through experiential learning and role play. By engaging in a role-play activity and watching a video, students will learn how to take turns, be considerate, and allow others to participate. This lesson is crucial for developing social appropriateness and fostering a respectful classroom environment.

Step 1

Introduction

  • Briefly introduce the topic of respect and social appropriateness.
  • Explain the importance of taking turns and being considerate in group settings.

Step 2

Video Viewing

5 mins

  • Watch the video Respecting Each Other in School.
  • Ask students to pay attention to how characters show respect and take turns.

Step 3

Discussion

3 mins

  • Discuss the video with the student.
  • Ask questions like: What did you notice about how the characters interacted? How did they show respect?
  • Explicitly explain social rules such as waiting for your turn, using polite language, and recognizing personal space.

Step 4

Role-Play Activity

8 mins

  • Provide role-play scenario cards to the student.
  • Have the student act out scenarios where they practice taking turns and being considerate.
  • Guide the student through each scenario, offering feedback and encouragement.
  • Highlight specific social cues and appropriate responses, such as making eye contact, using a calm voice, and acknowledging others' feelings.
  • Teach students to recognize when to provide wait time and space for others by observing non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, and body language that indicate someone wants to speak or needs more time.
