Reading

Respect in Our Lives

This reading passage explains the importance of respect in everyday life and how it affects our interactions with others.

Respect is a way of treating or thinking about something or someone. If you respect your teacher, you admire her and treat her well. People respect others who are impressive for any reason, such as being in authority — like a teacher or police officer — or being older — like a grandparent. You show respect by being polite and kind. Respect is important because it helps us get along with others and creates a positive environment.

Reading

The Lion and the Mouse

This reading provides a written version of the classic fable, illustrating the themes of kindness and respect through the interaction between a lion and a mouse.

Once upon a time, a great lion lay asleep in the forest. A little mouse, running through the forest, accidentally ran across the lion's nose and woke him up. The lion grabbed the mouse with his huge paw and opened his big jaws to swallow him.

"Please, please let me go," begged the mouse. "If you let me go, I will surely repay you one day."

The lion laughed at the idea of a tiny mouse helping him, but he was in a good mood and let the mouse go.

A few days later, the lion was caught in a hunter's net. He roared and struggled, but he couldn't break free. The mouse heard the lion's cries and came to help. He gnawed through the ropes with his sharp teeth and set the lion free.

"You laughed at the idea of me helping you," said the mouse, "but now you see that even a little mouse can help a great lion."

The lion was grateful and learned that kindness and respect can come from the most unexpected places.
