Script

Teacher Script: Respect: Treat Others How?

Warm-Up: What is Respect? (5 minutes)

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to talk about a very important word: respect. Can anyone tell me what they think respect means? There are no wrong answers, just your ideas!"

"To get us started, I have a warm-up activity for you. I'm handing out a paper called What is Respect? Warm Up. On this paper, I want you to draw a picture or write one word that comes to your mind when you hear the word 'respect'. Take about 2-3 minutes to do this."

(Pause for 2-3 minutes while students work.)

"Okay, artists and writers! Who would like to share what they drew or wrote? Remember, we are showing respect by listening to our classmates. (Call on 2-3 students, encouraging simple explanations or examples). Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas!"

Introduction & Video: Respectful Choices (8 minutes)

"Excellent! Many of your ideas connect to what respect truly means. Now, let's look at our Respectful Choices Slide Deck to learn more. (Advance to Slide 2: What is Respect?)"

"Respect is treating others, ourselves, and our things with care and kindness. It means valuing everyone's feelings and ideas. Think about it: when you respect someone, you listen to them, you are kind to them, and you value their thoughts. When you respect yourself, you take care of your body and mind. And when you respect things, like our classroom books or toys, you use them carefully so others can enjoy them too."

"Can anyone give me an example of how they show respect at home? Or at school?"

"Great examples! Now, we're going to watch a short video that shows even more ways people show respect. Pay close attention to the actions you see. (Advance to Slide 3: Watch and Learn About Respect, play video from link in slide deck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go-1t8HwW2o)"

"Wow, that video showed us so many different ways to be respectful! (Advance to Slide 4: Discussing Respect). What respectful actions did you see in the video? (Allow 2-3 students to share). How can we show respect in our classroom? And at home? (Encourage diverse answers, guiding them to include listening, sharing, taking turns, using kind words)."

Activity: Respectful Scenarios Game (10 minutes)

"You all have fantastic ideas about respect! Now, let's have some fun and play a game called Respectful Scenarios Game! (Advance to Slide 5: Time for Respect Bingo!, Note: Slide 5 title still says Bingo, but the content will be the scenario game). I have some scenario cards here. Each card describes a situation where you need to decide how to show respect."

"We'll play by having volunteers pick a card. You can either act out the respectful way to handle the situation, or you can describe what you would do and why it's respectful. Remember, there can be many kind and caring ways to respond! After each scenario, we'll talk about it as a class. Does everyone understand? Great! Who wants to go first?"

(Facilitate the Respectful Scenarios Game. Encourage discussion after each scenario, asking questions like: "Was that respectful? Why? What else could we do?". Provide vocabulary support for ESL students as needed.)

Wrap-Up & Exit Ticket: Respect Reflection (7 minutes)

"Great job with our Respectful Scenarios Game, everyone! You showed a lot of understanding about respectful actions. Now, it's time to think a little more about what we've learned today."

"I am handing out an Respect Reflection Exit Ticket. Please write one way you will show respect to someone else tomorrow. It can be to a family member, a friend, a teacher, or even a pet!"

(Distribute exit tickets and allow students time to write. Collect tickets as students finish.)

"Thank you for an amazing lesson on respect today, everyone! Remember, treating others with kindness and care makes our classroom and our world a better place. You are all very respectful students!"

Answer Key

Respectful Actions Worksheet Answer Key

Instructions: Read each situation. Identify if it shows respect, and provide reasoning.

  1. Situation: Maria listens quietly when her friend is talking.
    • Does this show respect? YES
    • Why? This shows respect because listening quietly means you are paying attention to what the other person is saying and valuing their words and feelings. It shows you care about them.

  1. Situation: Tom takes a toy from his friend without asking.
    • Does this show respect? NO
    • Why? This does not show respect because taking something without asking means you are not respecting your friend's belongings or their right to decide what happens to their things. It's important to ask permission.

  1. Situation: Sara uses kind words when she talks to her teacher.
    • Does this show respect? YES
    • Why? This shows respect because using kind words makes others feel good and shows that you value them. It creates a positive and friendly environment.

  1. Situation: David draws on the classroom wall.
    • Does this show respect? NO
    • Why? This does not show respect because drawing on the wall damages property that belongs to everyone in the classroom. It shows a lack of care for shared spaces and resources.

  1. Situation: The class helps to clean up their art supplies after a project.
    • Does this show respect? YES
    • Why? This shows respect because helping to clean up means you are taking responsibility for shared materials and keeping the classroom tidy for everyone. It shows care for the environment and for future users.
