Respect Through History

Learn about historical figures and respect

Students will explore historical figures who demonstrated respect and learn how these actions impacted their communities. This lesson will help students understand the importance of respect and inspire them to act respectfully in their own lives.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Greet the students and introduce the lesson topic: 'Respect Through History'.
Explain that they will learn about historical figures who showed respect and how it changed their communities.
Briefly discuss what respect means and ask students to share examples of respect they have seen or experienced.

Step 2

Video Segment

8 mins

Show the video Respecting Each Other in School to the class.
After the video, ask students to share what they learned about respect from the video.

Step 3

Exploration of Historical Figures

10 mins

Divide students into small groups and give each group a handout with information about a historical figure (e.g., Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela).
Ask each group to read their handout and discuss how the figure demonstrated respect.
Groups should identify the actions of the figure and the impact of those actions on their community.

Step 4

Group Presentations

Each group presents their historical figure to the class.
Encourage students to listen respectfully to each group and think about the different ways respect was shown.

Step 5

Discussion

3 mins

Lead a class discussion on the different ways respect was demonstrated by the historical figures.
Ask students how these actions changed the communities and what might have happened if the figures had not acted respectfully.

Step 6

Reflection Activity

2 mins

Hand out the reflection worksheet.
Students write one way they can show respect in their own lives, inspired by the historical figures they learned about.
Collect the worksheets or ask a few students to share their reflections if time permits.
