Lesson Plan

Respect & Reflect

Students will be able to explain what respect and self-awareness are, give examples of acting respectfully, and think about their own feelings and actions.

Learning about respect helps students get along better with others and handle social times well. Understanding yourself (self-awareness) helps you know your feelings and actions, which leads to better self-control and caring for others.

What does respect mean to YOU?

Welcome students and introduce the topic of respect. Encourage quick, one-word responses to get everyone thinking.

Respect: Be Kind and Care

What is Respect?

Being kind and caring to others and yourself.

Why is it important?

It helps us get along and feel good!

Think: How can you show respect at school?

Explain respect simply. Emphasize that it's about treating others and yourself with care and kindness. Ask for simple examples.

Self-Awareness: Know Your Feelings

What is Self-Awareness?

Knowing your own feelings, thoughts, and actions.

Why is it important?

It helps you make good choices and understand why you feel a certain way.

Think: How are you feeling right now? Happy? Calm? Excited?

Introduce self-awareness. Explain it as understanding your own feelings and how your actions affect others. Ask students to consider how they feel right now.

Game Time: Make Good Choices!

Let's play a game about making good choices and showing respect!

Introduce the game and explain that they will think about different situations.

Game

Respectful Choices Game

How to Play:

  1. The teacher will read a situation.
  2. Students will think about the best way to show respect in that situation.
  3. Students can give a thumbs up for a respectful choice, or a thumbs down for a not-so-respectful choice. Or, they can share their own idea.
  4. We will talk about why some choices are respectful and how they show we understand our feelings (self-awareness).

Situations:

Situation 1: Your friend really wants to tell you about their favorite video game. But you are super excited about something cool you did today.

  • Respectful Choice: Listen to your friend first. Then, you can share your news.
  • Why? This shows you care about what your friend has to say, even when you are excited. You know you are excited, but you choose to listen first.

Situation 2: You are working on a group project. One of your teammates has a different idea than yours. You think your idea is better.

  • Respectful Choice: Listen to their idea all the way through. Then, calmly explain your idea and why you think it would work. Maybe you can even use parts of both ideas!
  • Why? This shows you respect their thoughts and what they want to share, even if it's different from yours. You know your own thoughts and feelings, but you also think about others.

Situation 3: You accidentally bump into someone in the hallway and their books fall.

  • Respectful Choice: Stop, say "I'm sorry," and help them pick up their books.
  • Why? This shows you care about others and take responsibility for your actions. You are aware that you caused a problem and act to fix it.
