Lesson Plan

Respect Agreement Lesson Plan

Students will collaboratively create a Respect Agreement by generating and agreeing on at least five clear, positively worded classroom expectations that promote mutual respect and positive interactions.

A shared Respect Agreement builds student ownership, fosters positive class culture, reduces conflicts, and ensures everyone understands and commits to respectful behaviors.

Creating Our Respect Agreement

8th Grade | 15-Minute Tier 1 Lesson

Let’s work together to define how we show respect every day!

Welcome students and introduce today’s activity. Explain that they will co-create a Respect Agreement to guide classroom behavior.

Why Do We Need a Respect Agreement?

• What does respect look and feel like in our classroom?
• Respect helps everyone learn and feel safe.
• Goal: Co-create clear expectations we all follow.

Pose the question, define respect, and explain why a shared agreement matters. Listen for student responses.

Brainstorm Expectations

• In groups of 3–4, write one expectation per sticky note.
• Use positive, “We will…” statements (e.g., “We speak kindly to each other.”)
• Aim for 5–7 ideas per group.

Divide students into small groups at chart stations. Remind them to use positive language and sentence starters if needed.

Cluster & Vote

• Place sticky notes on chart paper and read your top 2 aloud.
• As a class, group similar ideas into themes.
• Each student gets 2 votes to select our top 5 expectations.
• Teacher records final statements on the Respect Agreement Template.

Have groups post and share their top two ideas. Guide the class to cluster similar notes and vote on the top five.

Finalize & Reflect

• Read our Respect Pact aloud. How will this guide our actions?
• Students sign below the statements.
• Display the agreement in the classroom.
• Exit Ticket: “One way I’ll show respect today is…”

Read the final agreement together, have students sign, and display it. Collect exit tickets.
