Lesson Plan

Respect in Science: Wolfhound Ways!

Students will collaboratively define and illustrate respectful behaviors specific to their St. Patrick Wolfhounds science classroom, aligning with Glasser Quality School and Responsive Classroom principles.

Establishing clear expectations for respectful behavior is crucial for creating a positive, productive, and safe science classroom where all students feel valued, connected, and ready to learn. This lesson empowers students to take ownership of their learning environment.

Audience

6th Grade Students

Time

15-20 minutes

Approach

Through guided discussion and collaborative design.

Materials

Whiteboard or Projector, Markers or digital drawing tools, Respectful Science Slide Deck, Science Classroom Norms Worksheet, and Respectful Role Play Relay (Optional Extension)

Prep

Prepare Materials

5 minutes

  • Review the Respectful Science Slide Deck and discussion prompts.
    * Print or prepare to display the Science Classroom Norms Worksheet for collaborative work.
    * Ensure whiteboard/projector and markers/digital tools are ready for student poster/slide creation.
    * Prepare the Respectful Role Play Relay scenarios if you plan to use it as an extension.
    * Reflect on Glasser Quality School (choice theory, basic needs) and Responsive Classroom (routines, norms) connections to reinforce during the lesson.

Step 1

Warm-Up & Connect (2 min)

2 minutes

  • Greet students using a Responsive Classroom approach.
    * Briefly introduce the topic: "Today, we're going to talk about what it really means to be respectful in our science classroom. How does being respectful help us learn better and feel more connected to each other?"

Step 2

Define Respect (3 min)

3 minutes

  • Display Slide 2: What Does Respect Look Like?
    * Facilitate a quick discussion: "What are some specific actions or words that show respect in any classroom? Think about how we treat our tools, our experiments, and each other. How does this connect to our Catholic values and treating others as Christ would?"
    * Guide them to think about Glasser's needs: How does respect help meet our need for belonging, power (through responsibility), and fun?

Step 3

Science Classroom Norms Design (6 min)

6 minutes

  • Transition to Slide 3: Our Wolfhound Science Norms.
    * Distribute the Science Classroom Norms Worksheet.
    * Explain the task: "As St. Patrick Wolfhounds, what are the must-do's for being successful and connected in this science classroom? Think about safety, group work, using equipment, and listening to each other. We want to design a poster or Google Slide that captures these key norms."
    * Guide students to brainstorm and collectively decide on 3-5 key respectful actions. Provide examples if needed (e.g., "We listen to all ideas, even if they're different," "We clean up our lab station thoroughly"). Encourage them to think about how these actions demonstrate respect and contribute to a quality learning environment.
    * Students will begin designing their chosen poster or Google Slide based on their agreed-upon norms.

Step 4

Share & Reflect (3 min)

3 minutes

  • Have each group briefly share one or two of their chosen norms and why they are important.
    * Conclude by emphasizing the importance of these shared norms for a positive, successful, and respectful science classroom.
    * Collect Science Classroom Norms Worksheet to review ideas for the final classroom poster/slide.

Step 5

Optional Extension: Respectful Role Play Relay (5-7 min)

5-7 minutes

  • If time permits, engage students in the Respectful Role Play Relay to actively practice the norms they just created. This can be a fun way to reinforce understanding and identify areas for further discussion.

Respect in Science: Wolfhound Ways!

How do we make our science classroom the best place to learn and grow?

Welcome students and set a positive tone. Briefly introduce the purpose of the lesson: to define and create classroom norms for respect in science, linking it to our school's values and educational philosophies.

What Does Respect Look Like?

In our classroom, respect means...

  • Listening when others speak
  • Taking care of our shared space
  • Being kind with our words

But what about in Science? How does respect help us with experiments, working in groups, and using tools?

Engage students in a discussion about general respectful behaviors. Prompt them to think about how respect applies to the unique context of a science classroom (materials, experiments, collaboration). Connect to Catholic values and treating others with dignity.

Our Wolfhound Science Norms

As St. Patrick Wolfhounds, what are our 'must-do's' for success and connection in this science classroom?

  • How do we show respect for safety?
  • How do we show respect for our materials and experiments?
  • How do we show respect for our classmates and teacher?

Let's design our own poster or Google Slide!

Introduce the idea of co-creating norms. Explain that these 'must-do's' will help them feel safe, belong, and succeed. Distribute the worksheet or prepare for digital collaboration.

### Being a respectful Wolfhound in science helps everyone learn, feel safe, and connect with each other. It makes our classroom a quality place to be!

Instructions: Work with your group to brainstorm and decide on 3-5 "must-do" norms for being successful and connected in our science classroom. Think about:

  • How we treat each other
  • How we use our science tools and equipment
  • How we work together on experiments
  • How we ensure safety for everyone

Write your norms below and then prepare to design a poster or Google Slide to display them in our classroom!

Game

Respectful Role Play Relay: Science Edition!

Objective: To practice and identify respectful behaviors in various science classroom scenarios.

Time: 5-7 minutes

Materials: Small slips of paper with scenarios, a hat or bag to draw from.

Instructions:

  1. Introduce the Game (1 minute): "Alright Wolfhounds, let's put our new norms into action! We're going to play 'Respectful Role Play Relay.' I have some quick science classroom situations here. Your job, in teams, is to show us how a respectful St. Patrick Wolfhound would act in that situation."

  2. Form Teams (1 minute): Quickly divide the 5 students into two small teams (e.g., one team of 2, one team of 3).

  3. Explain the Rules (1 minute):

    • One student from each team will draw a scenario from the hat.
    • The team then has 30 seconds to quickly
