Slide Deck

Respect Express

Individual Support Lesson for 7th Grade • 60 minutes• Tier 3 Individual Intervention

Welcome the student and introduce the lesson. Explain that today’s session—Respect Express—is about learning respectful ways to get a peer’s attention instead of yelling or spitting.

Session Objectives

• Learn and practice respectful attention-seeking strategies (hand raise, quiet signal)
• Replace screaming profanity and spitting with appropriate communication methods

Read aloud the objective and why. Emphasize the goal is to replace profanity and spitting with respectful communication.

Why Respectful Communication?

Challenging attention-seeking behaviors disrupt learning and friendships. Teaching respectful requests will:
• Reduce profanity and spitting
• Improve peer interactions
• Foster a positive classroom climate

Discuss why respectful communication matters. Ask the student to share any experiences of disruptive attention seeking and how it felt.

Social Story: Asking for Attention

Let’s read the Attention Request Social Story together. It shows why and how to ask for help or attention politely.

Show the social story. Read it together, pausing to discuss key points. Ask the student: “Why do we use respectful requests?”

Steps for Respectful Requests

Refer to the Respectful Communication Visual Support:

  1. Stay calm (deep breaths)
  2. Raise your hand or use a quiet signal
  3. Wait patiently
  4. Speak politely when called on

Point to each visual support step. Explain and model each one. Encourage the student to repeat steps aloud.

Comprehension Check

• What will you do instead of yelling?
• How will you show you need attention?
• Why do you wait patiently after raising your hand?

Use these prompts to check comprehension. Encourage full sentences and correct terminology.

Role-Play Practice

Use the Respect Express Role-Play Scenario Cards to practice situations like:
• Asking to join a game
• Requesting help on classwork
• Getting a friend’s attention

Model one scenario incorrectly (yelling/spitting), then correctly (hand raise/quiet tone). Let the student practice 3–4 scenarios, rotating roles.

Token Reinforcement

Earn a token for each correct respectful request on the Respect Express Token Reward Chart.
Exchange tokens for a preferred item or short break when the goal is reached.

Explain token rules clearly. Show how tokens are placed and exchanged. Encourage verbal praise when tokens are earned.

Reflection & Data Collection

Complete the Respect Express Data Collection Sheet:
• Number of correct requests vs. errors
• Which strategy felt easiest?
• Which strategy was hardest?

Guide the student through recording data. Ask reflective questions and write responses together.

Next Steps & Follow-Up

• Plan when and where you’ll use these strategies in class
• Teacher and student will meet again to review progress in one week
• Keep your visual support and signal cards handy

Summarize key takeaways. Set a follow-up check-in time. Encourage the student to use these strategies in upcoming classes.

Reading

Attention Request Social Story

Introduction

My name is Sam. Sometimes when I want to talk to my friends or the teacher, I feel excited or worried. It can be hard for me to wait quietly, and I might shout bad words or spit. When I do this, my friends feel upset or scared. I want to feel calm and have my friends listen to me in a good way.

Why We Use Respectful Requests

When I use polite and calm ways to get attention:

  • My friends and teacher feel safe.
  • They understand what I need.
  • I can join games and conversations easily.

Steps for Asking for Attention

  1. Stop and Breathe.
I take three slow breaths to help me feel calm.
  2. Use My Signal.
I raise my hand, tap my desk softly, or use a quiet card.
(Look at the Respectful Communication Visual Support for pictures.)
  3. Make Eye Contact and Wait.
I look at my friend or teacher and wait patiently. I stay silent until they notice me.
  4. Speak Politely.
When someone nods or calls on me, I say clearly:
    • “May I please join the game?”
    • “Can I have a turn?”
    • “I have a question, please.”

What Happens Next

  • When I follow these steps, my friends and teacher smile and listen.
  • I feel proud of myself because I used a respectful way to ask.
  • I make more friends and have fun together.

Practice Makes Perfect

I can practice these steps:

  • At home with my family.
  • During class when I need help.
  • In the cafeteria or playground with friends.

Every time I use a calm and polite request, I am showing respect and kindness. I can remember: Stop – Signal – Wait – Speak.
